In demand: conscious cosmetics packaging solutions
May 2023The growing cosmetics market has led to many packaging solutions. The rigid tube is the leading packaging type, while the squeezable tube is witnessing an 86% average annual growth (Global, CAGR 2018 to 2022). With consumers becoming more environmentally conscious, there is also a growing demand for sustainable packaging solutions. Bio-based or plant-based packaging, carbon labeling and Green Dot Certified are among the fastest-growing environmental filters.

Sustainability in Cosmetics
Jun 2023As consumers’ growing awareness about environmental issues is driving up demand for natural and sustainable products, the cosmetics industry is heightening its focus on developing formulas that meet these credentials. Products with green claims such as “recyclable,” “made from recycled materials,” and “responsibly sourced” are leading, while labels that distinguish bio-based/plant-based packaging, carbon labeling and Green Dot Certified are gaining ground.
New personal care launches show the use of natural ingredients and sustainability claims. Different naturally derived ingredients are the fastest growing in product launches. Emollient coco-caprylate is the fastest-growing ingredient, with a 22% average annual compound growth globally from 2018 to 2022. Different oils also have a noticeable product launch increase in the last five years, for example, argan kernel oil, olive oil and sunflower seed oil.
Consumers are seeking to improve the health of their skin. Most often, this benefit is provided by active ingredients that help promote skin hydration, provide anti-aging effects and shield against environmental stressors. New product launches focus on mentioning active ingredients on the product label and promoting their effectiveness.
Transparent labeling has become increasingly important as consumers are more concerned about the products they buy or use. Whether it is information about allergens, irritants, potentially harmful chemicals or the product’s environmental impact, it is disclosed in an easy-to-understand format, including the percentage of each ingredient used so that consumers can make more informed decisions about the products.
Supplements with skin health claims have had an annual growth of 31% (Global, CAGR 2018 to 2022). Capsules (27%) lead the product launches, but most innovations are in gummy format, with an annual growth of 64% (Global, CAGR 2018 to 2022). Biotin is the top ingredient for these supplements targeting beauty purposes (35%).
The use of fermented ingredients in personal care products is increasing across all beauty categories, especially in facial skincare. Products with fermented ingredients promise better skincare absorption, skin barrier support, sustainability and clean label claims.
