Algenist’s blue-green algae and vitamin C serum targets pigmentation in young adults
19 Aug 2021 --- Algenist has unveiled Skinclarity Brightening Serum which targets skin pigmentation that can appear in young individuals in the 20-year age range.
The condition emerges most prominently in fair and deep complexions as dark spots, uneven tones and textures, as well as overall dullness.
The skincare brand extracted L-ascorbic acid from spirulina-derived blue-green algae in the new vegan vitamin C serum, which restores skin clarity and improves skin texture.
“If an ingredient or technology does not exist to help deliver on our promise of ten-day results, or if we see a way to re-envision traditional methods – we make our ingredients,” says Rose Fernandez, CEO of Algenist.
“Today, we have a high rate of consumers searching for vitamin C. This inspired us to develop a naturally-derived vitamin C from blue spirulina.”
Clinically backed performance
In a four-week clinical trial performed on 26 participants, Skinclarity Brightening Serum improved skin brightness, texture, clarity, firmness and elasticity. It also resulted in even skin tone, a reduction in dullness and the appearance of wrinkles.
Consumers of all skin types, tones and colors showed enhanced brightness and luminosity, evened skin tone and texture, and improved signs of photoaging.
“In our scientific study, our new blue algae vitamin C outperformed other commonly used forms of vitamin C and other brightening ingredients specifically used for targeting pigmentation that we tested,” adds Fernandez.
“This coupled with the fact that there was an opportunity to develop a new vitamin C serum clinically studied on melanin-rich skin, which can experience skin sensitivity, blotchiness or products that do not work.”
Sustainably sourced
The headline for the launch of Skinclarity Brightening Serum is “Orange Vitamin C is out, Blue C is in,” remarks Shannon Shapiro, vice president of marketing at Algenist. “This brings awareness to our new source of vitamin C and bucking the perception that pure, premium vitamin C only comes from oranges or citrus.”
The team was motivated by extensive research on blue-green algae and the ability to source, extract, and isolate its naturally occurring vitamin C component, “which could then be regeneratively produced in a lab,” comments Tammy Yaiser, vice president of product development at Algenist.
“The spirulina is sustainably grown, and the natural vitamin C component is isolated and concentrated. The result is a pure ascorbic acid raw material,” adds Yaiser.
“The leftover algae by-product is still rich in nutrients and can benefit other applications such as fermentation, agricultural fertilizers and wastewater remediation. A part of the leftover biomass is used for making spirulina extract and spirulina oil.”
Encompassing potent ingredients
Skinclarity Brightening Serum is also formulated with Algenist’s patented ingredient, Alguronic acid that helps to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
It also has a blue skin-forward Marine Ferment to help improve the appearance of skin texture and hydrate skin.
Skin hydration increases due to a triple-action moisturizing complex that combines hyaluronic acid and Alguronic acid and the Tansy extract to help condition and soothe skin.
Consumers are advised to apply one to two pumps of the product on their face, neck and décolleté.
Naturality is a growingly prominent claim in the skincare space, leveraging the popularity of clean label ingredients.
In this arena, Zanthalene, a scalable natural active ingredient created through green fractionation that soothes skin, was recently introduced by Givaudan Active Beauty.
