Kaffage by Kaffe Bueno: “Proaging powerhouse” redefining skinification trend with skin tone mimicry
16 Nov 2023 --- Danish biotechnology company Kaffe Bueno is highlighting in vivo data revealing makeup applications for its Kaffage biopolymer active line based on upcycled coffee. The ingredients are applicable for BB creams, CC creams, foundations, concealers and tinted sunscreens and moisturizers.
In an era where consumers seek efficiency and multifunctionality in their beauty routines, Kaffage is touted as “groundbreaking” multifunctional. Kaffage aligns with the industry trend of makeup skinification while bringing an eco-friendly edge, “100% derived from upcycled defatted coffee.”
According to Kaffe Bueno, Kaffage offers a solution beyond aesthetic appeal. Derived from years of market insights and powered by the fusion of coffee and technology, Kaffage provides scientifically proven skin benefits while mimicking all skin tones with its natural hues.
Its amphiphilic nature, loving water and oil, and emulsifying properties may appeal to formulators and manufacturers.
In vitro and In vivo trials: Skin protection
In an in vitro assay, Kaffage demonstrated its cellular-protective benefits by reducing UVA-induced glycation in human keratinocyte cells.
The results showcased a “significant” reduction in Advanced Glycation End-product (AGEs) levels, highlighting Kaffage’s effectiveness in combating glycation, a process associated with premature skin aging.
A randomized 28-day in vivo study involving 50 volunteers in Spain affirmed Kaffage’s transformative impact.
A BB cream enriched with 3% Kaffage-BD led to a 16% increase in skin hydration. VISIA-CR imaging revealed reduced fine lines, enhanced skin hydration and diminished hyperpigmentation, providing tangible evidence of Kaffage’s efficacy in addressing several skin care concerns.
Triple-action benefits
Kaffage is marketed as a triple-action ingredient, composed of arabinogalactans and phenolic groups, offering a “triad of benefits” in skin care formulations.
- Protective-aging benefits: At a cellular level, Kaffage prevents UV-induced glycation, preserving collagen and elastin, proteins vulnerable to UV rays that contribute to premature skin aging. In vivo, it proves valuable for retaining moisture, reducing fine lines and addressing hyperpigmentation.
- SPF boosting: Kaffage enhances sun protection, fortifying products like tinted sunscreens to provide an added layer of defense.
- Mimicking different skin tones: Kaffage reduces the need for iron oxide usage in formulations by contributing to the mimicry of various skin tones.
In a recent exclusive interview, Personal Care Insights caught up with Alejandro Franco, co-founder and CCO of Kaffe Bueno, exploring how the eco-footprint of upcycling holds up against traditional sourcing methods.
Next to developments at Kaffe Bueno, upcycling coffee for added-value skin care product development continues to present an attractive positioning for other players in the emergent field. Mibelle Biochemistry, for instance, upcycled coffee silverskin into a moisturization ingredient.
