L’Oréal powers up with solar energy giant EDF to reach 2025 carbon targets
24 Feb 2023 --- Personal care titan L’Oréal has reached an agreement with French state-owned Électricité de France (EDF) to achieve carbon neutrality across all its sites in the next two years.
EDF will build two solar-powered plants set to provide 25% of L’Oréal’s energy needs in France. The first plant will be operational in Q3 2024 and the second one in Q2 2025, with a combined installed capacity of 27 MWp.
Moreover, EDF will continue to cover all electricity needs of L’Oréal in France in the next two years.
“With these contracts, the L’Oréal Group will benefit from a controlled purchase power agreement price over the long-term, will guarantee the renewable origin of the electricity thus purchased and will develop new capacities for its activities,” notes EDF.
2025 goal
L’Oréal plans to achieve carbon neutrality by improving energy efficiency and using 100% renewable energy.
“This power purchase agreement is in line with our commitments made within the framework of the L’Oréal program for the future in order to consume renewable energy for all of our activities sustainably,” says Audrey Izard, L’Oréal Group’s indirect purchasing director.
“For L’Oréal, creating beauty that responsibly moves the world forward requires close collaboration with our partners. It is in this spirit of an extended ecosystem that we innovate and develop sustainable solutions with EDF,” she continues.
At the end of 2021, L’Oréal had 100 carbon neutral sites, according to the business.
In 2022, L’Oréal’s North Asia business was the first in the entire company to achieve carbon neutrality for all operated sites, plants, distribution centers, offices, as well as research and innovation centers spanning the five geographic markets of mainland China, Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong and Taiwan.
Beyond 2025
In the next few years, the company plans to continue targeting emissions, such as Scope 3 emissions that areproduced throughout the entire value chain.
“By 2030, we will innovate to enable our consumers to reduce the carbon dioxide emissions resulting from the use of our products by 25% compared to 2016, on average and per finished product,” explains the company.
Furthermore, L’Oréal plans to slash the emissions linked to the transport of its products and of its strategic suppliers by half in 2030.
Recently, The CDP recognized L’Oréal – together with Firmenich and Kao – for its environmental achievements on climate change, forests and water security.
