Perfect Corp. study finds AI-powered skincare imaging at par with conventional analysis methods
15 Nov 2022 --- Perfect Corp.’s latest global beauty trend report evidences that artificial intelligence (AI) skin technology is a precise, cost-effective consultation solution for the dermatology and medical spa industries. Based on performance, these novel platforms are considered viable alternatives to large imaging booth hardware.
The report, The Rise of AI Skin Technology, explores the growing consumer interest in skin health through a study by Dr. Steven Feldman, professor of dermatology at Wake Forest School of Medicine.
Dr. Feldman’s study compared Perfect Corp.’s AI Skin technology to physician skin assessments and the imaging systems commonly used in clinical settings, highlighting that the AI Skin Tech achieves 95% test-retest reliability – consistent and accurate results identifying the same key skin concerns with each scan were achieved.
“I think in terms of medical dermatology if I am treating a teenager with visible pores and I give them a treatment, if they can track on a regular basis, either in my office or on their own, how their skin is improving, it becomes like a game and they can see their progress over time,” says Feldman.
“It’s really easy to be invested in your treatment if you can see on your phone how you’re doing over time. I think that offers tremendous value to our specialty and to our patients.”
The study investigated the differences between an AI-driven skin assessment technology, physician skin assessment, and an “industry-standard” clinical imaging system. The software was found to deliver results twenty times faster.
Perfect Corp.’s AI Skin software was also found to be easy to integrate across various devices and platforms and operate seamlessly from a smartphone or tablet in the patient’s hand.
“The recent study out of Wake Forest University reveals the benefits of AI technology in providing precise skin assessments across industries, and we look forward to seeing how this technology improves the consumer experience for dermatology and medical spa service providers,” says Alice Chang, CEO and founder at Perfect Corp.
Machine learning for skin evaluation
Dr. Feldman’s study found the AI Skin software to precisely and accurately assess redness, wrinkles, eyebags and radiance, confirming the results were “highly” correlated with assessments done by physicians.
As part of the analysis, 50 consumers were recruited to participate in another study comparing the skin assessments generated by the AI skin technology to the clinical imaging device results.
Regarding the cost-effectiveness of the software as compared to imaging booth devices, Perfect Corp. details: “With highly optimized AI algorithms, Perfect Corp.’s AI Skin software delivers consistent and reliable results without a need for de
dicated hardware, special cameras, lighting, background setup or special probes.”Post-pandemic demand at a high
The company details that consumer interest in skincare has “skyrocketed” in recent years and credits the COVID-19 pandemic as a driver of the trend.
The company shares that in 2022, the skin score quiz on its YouCam Makeup app received over 19 million interactions. The skin score tool provides app users with digital skin health analysis.
“There is now a huge demand for technologically driven services in beauty. The COVID-19 pandemic has played a huge part in this acceleration as consumers turned to brand digital channels during the height of the pandemic for product advice and inspiration,” Chang previously told PersonalCareInsights.
