Bioiberica expands nutricosmetics market with beauty-from-within Dermial debut
11 May 2022 --- Molecule extracting expert Bioiberica has unveiled Dermial, “the first hyaluronic acid matrix ingredient of its kind,” as a dietary supplement for its growing skin and beauty category. The new anti-aging ingredient is being showcased at Vitafoods 2022.
“What is the meaning of the hyaluronic acid matrix? It means that it is a natural extract that contains 60 to 75% of hyaluronic acid and more than 10% of glycosaminoglycans, including dermatan and other components and collagen.” Mónica Gómez, marketing manager of branded ingredients healthcare at Bioiberica tells, PersonalCareInsights at the Vitafoods show.
“These are the main components of the dermis, which is the second layer of the skin.”
Alongside Dermial, the company is introducing DAOgest, a digestive supplement ingredient to improve histamine digestion. The dual debut aims to “evolve” the healthcare market toward the growing heath, skin and beauty categories.
“Gummy solutions, especially, are becoming a preferred format for many. With a reported 75% growth in 2021, they now have the largest non-pill market share at 21.3%,” comments Jaume Reguant, healthcare director at Bioiberica.
The COVID-19 pandemic brought the rise of beauty-from-within trends, Adèle Nowak, account manager at Enzybel Group, previously told PersonalCareInsights.
Glycosaminoglycans and hyaluronic acid
Dermial is designed for formulators to address the rising demand for beauty-from-within supplements. “It is easy to formulate at a low daily dose (60 mg) and exhibits excellent organoleptic properties,” details its manufacturer.
Glycosaminoglycans play a considerable role in various cell activities such as cell growth and regeneration.
With the company’s competency in glycosaminoglycans, Dermial is created by a mix of hyaluronic acid (60-75%), glycosaminoglycans (including dermatan and chondroitin sulfate) and hydrolyzed collagen. These three are “naturally-occurring components.”
“So it stimulates the endogenous production of hyaluronic acids, hydrating the skin. It also increases the body's production of collagen type I and type III which are the main collagen found in the skin, also increasing the body’s production of elastin. These have a regenerative effect because it promotes cell proliferation. And cell migration in the skin,” elaborates Gómez.
“Cell migration is the ability of the cells to move towards a place where there is kind of a wound or wrinkle…the cells moved more into the to the center of the of the image so it means that they were migrating to the place where there is needed normally a wound or a wrinkle,” continues Gómez describing an image of cell migration improving wrinkles.
During aging, much of the hyaluronic acid and glycosaminoglycans such as Dermatan sulfate go through changes in the skin. However, when hyaluronic acid is taken orally, it is absorbed by the intestines and builds up in connective tissues and the skin, notes Bioiberica.
Additionally, the mix is synergetic, enabling the development of products to “nourish, hydrate and replenish the skin.”
Further studies have found that the composition is better when comparing microbial fermentation origin hyaluronic acid. It also showed increased production of type I collagen by 48% within in-vitro testing.
“Hyaluronic acid is naturally occurring in the dermis and epidermis layers of the skin. Its main function is to bind water molecules to collagen, trapping it in the skin and keeping it hydrated,” explains the company.
“Exponential growth” in nutricosmetics
With health-conscious consumers seeking beauty-from-within solutions, the nutricosmetics industry is experiencing an “exponential growth.”
“Consumers are increasingly opting for formats beyond pills, capsules and softgels – including gummies and functional products – to help them meet specific health and nutrition goals,” adds Reguant.
The company also invites industry players to partner on its website.
With increasing attention to beauty-from-within supplements, Mibelle Biochemistry introduced FenuKale Nu, a GMO-free, allergen-free, vegan and natural ingredient to combat environmental stress experienced by the skin.
Collagen and enzyme NPD
Bioiberica shares that there has been a lack of attention in the market toward histamine intolerance, leading the company to create DAOgest, a digestive health supplement.
DAOgest works by providing diamine oxidase (DAO) enzyme to improve the digestion of histamine.
“[DAOgest] a natural extract, the solution can provide an immediate effect at a low dose of 4.2 mg/serving.”
The company is also showcasing its Collavant n2, a native (undenatured) type II collagen for joint health.
Further, Gelita unveiled Verisol HST in collagen-based supplements to reduce wrinkles and promote collagen.
