Clariant launches biodegradable rheology modifier Aristoflex Eco T
22 Feb 2023 --- Clariant has launched a rheology modifier, Aristoflex Eco T, with patented technology that combines synthetic polymers’ performance with biopolymers’ environmental profile.
The formulation allows skincare developers to create products with a luxe texture without compromising on biodegradability and comes in time to be showcased at in-cosmetics Global 2023 in Barcelona next month.
“With the launch of Plantasens Biogum Tara back in 2021, Clariant started the journey toward sustainable high-performing rheology modifiers. Aristoflex Eco T is our next step on this journey and unlocks new possibilities for formulators in creating sophisticated yet sustainable skincare products,” says Michael Haspel, head of personal care and home care at Clariant.
Formulation stability
Aristoflex Eco T delivers strong thickening and stabilizing performance and is readily biodegradable, with a 71% renewable carbon index (RCI).
Rheology modifiers are a key ingredient in skincare formulations. They influence texture, viscosity and formulation stability. Overall, they impact the feeling of the product when it touches the skin and the general sensory experience.
Synthetic polymers are mainly used by formulators looking for high-performing rheology modifiers. Natural biopolymers often suffer performance drawbacks that can present a challenge in the luxurious texture of the product and skin feel.
Naturally-derived Aristoflex Eco T is the first modified biopolymer that demonstrates similar performance of synthetics with the added benefit of biodegradability.
Plucked from the Tara spinosa plant
The new rheology modifier is naturally derived from Tara Gum, obtained from the Tara spinosa plant that grows in the Peruvian Andes. It is readily biodegradable, meaning it does not build up in the environment.
Because it can stabilize oils and pigment, Aristoflex Eco T can be used in face moisturizers, body lotions and skin serums. It also works well in sun care products containing organic and mineral UV filters.
Meanwhile, Clariant displayed its commitment to sustainable sourcing of Brazil nuts as one of the essential components of its Ethience Protect skincare product ingredient to support the important role they play in the economy of the Amazon region.
In addition, Global Amines Company, a 50:50 joint venture of Clariant and Wilmar, signed an agreement to acquire the global and ester quats business from Clariant, expected to close in the first half 2023.
