Conscious perfumery: Calvin Klein’s fragrance received Cradle to Cradle gold certification
13 Apr 2022 --- Calvin Klein Fragrances, a division of Coty, has been awarded the first Cradle to Cradle gold certification in perfume for its CK Everyone Eau de Parfum. It achieved gold ranking in all five key areas: Material Health, Material Reutilization, Renewable Energy and Carbon Management, Water Stewardship and Social Fairness.
“Cradle to Cradle Certified is the global standard for safe and responsibly made products,” explains Coty.
The products are notably vegan, with 77% of ingredients from natural origins, including alcohol.
“It is a significant step in moving the beauty industry toward the universal use of safe, circular, and responsible products,” says Dr. Christina Raab, president and CEO of the Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute.
“We applaud Coty for setting a new standard with their first fragrance to be Cradle to Cradle Certified Gold: CK Everyone Eau de Parfum.”
Responsibly sourced from Mexico and Sri Lanka
CK Everyone Eau de Parfum is described to open with the freshness of an organic orange note from Mexico, with black tea derived from Sri Lanka, providing a powerful note.
Additionally, the perfume contains responsibly sourced Vetiver of a “particular quality” from a perfume house that Firmenich ethically sources from Haiti.
The Material Health acknowledgment ensures that the materials are not just safe for humans but also for the environment. Material Reutilization refers to product circularity which promotes the circular economy via “regenerative products, packaging and process design.”
Eco-friendly benefits
“Coty has set ambitious clean and green roadmaps for the future,” says Dr. Shimei Fan, chief scientific officer at Coty.
The perfume packaging is derivative of recycled materials, with the glass containing 10% “post-consumer recycled materials” and the carton containing 30% post-consumer recycled materials.”
Additionally, the factory where CK Everyone Eau de Parfum is produced uses renewable energy produced through the solar panels or purchases 100% renewable energy.
“I look forward to continuing to innovate and partnering with leaders like Calvin Klein and Cradle To Cradle Products Innovation Institute to create a more sustainable world,” states Fan.
