dsm-firmenich launches climate-protective skin barrier ingredient from Alps
Key takeaways
- dsm-firmenich launches Alpaflor Neurosooth from Alpine S. alpina, proven to inhibit neuroinflammatory mediators and boost ß-endorphin.
- In vivo results show 34% less stress-induced redness and 26% reduced water loss under heat stress after two months, plus 200% improved feelings of safety and calmness.
- Sustainably cultivated at high altitude with zero wild population impact, targeting rising consumer demand for climate-resilient, emotionally supportive skin care.

dsm-firmenich has launched Alpaflor Neurosooth to aid skin resilience amid rising global temperatures. The bioactive ingredient, sourced from the Alpine plant Scutellaria alpina, interrupts the skin-mind stress loop by lowering irritation and aiding against environmental stress.
The nutrition, health, and beauty innovator points out that in vitro and in vivo studies have confirmed Alpaflor Neurosooth’s efficacy in lowering neuroinflammatory mediators and improving overall skin comfort.
Additionally, dsm-firmenich has developed Evermind, a line formulated to promote skin barrier strength and emotional balance in daily routines.
Consumer concerns
Amid rising global temperatures, dsm-firmenich reveals that people’s skin is increasingly becoming prone to heat-induced stress. Factors, such as heat waves, thermal fluctuations, and dense urban environments, act as micro-stressors to the skin that can disrupt barrier function and increase sensitivity and discomfort.
“As climate extremes become the new normal, Alpine survivors become skin care heroes. Alpaflor Neurosooth harnesses the adaptive power of S. Alpina to help strengthen skin resilience over time — supporting lifelong healthier-looking skin and emotional comfort,” says Francesca Pascucci, global director for Marketing Skin Care at dsm-firmenich.
At the same time, consumers are seeking solutions that can support emotional well-being, as they are learning the importance of feelings on skin conditions. Neurocosmetics is a major focus in the personal care industry, with innovations targeting the skin-brain axis.
Resilience and sustainability
dsm-firmenich notes that climate awareness and mind-care beauty are major forces currently shaping the beauty industry. To meet both these demands, it developed Alpaflor Neurosooth, which can inhibit key neuroinflammatory mediators that are involved in stress signaling and boost β-endorphin production.
Additionally, the skin care active is also noted to help reduce irritation, restore comfort, and reinforce barrier resilience under environmental pressure.
S. alpina grows under extreme and volatile conditions at 500 and 2,500 meters, enabling it to develop adaptive defense mechanisms. Its mechanisms have enabled it to survive glaciers and thrive in environments where only some species can.
“Cultivated responsibly, S. alpina is organically grown on old Alpine moraines at high altitude, ensuring zero impact on wild populations,” notes Meriem Saber, global sustainability director at Beauty & Care at dsm-firmenich.
“The supply chain is local, ethical, and transparent, supporting Alpine biodiversity and responsible agricultural practices. A green, gentle extraction method preserves the plant’s chemical integrity while minimizing environmental impact.”
Proven performance under climate stress
By two months, Alpaflor Neurosooth was found to lower stress-induced redness by 34% compared to a placebo and trans-epidermal water loss by 26% under heat stress conditions.
To test well-being improvements, dsm-firmenich used its EmoCompass methodology, revealing up to a 200% increase in feelings of safety and calm versus placebo after two months.
In previous skin care developments, dsm-firmenich signed a memorandum of understanding with ASTech to strengthen competitiveness in the global sunscreen market.
