Estée Lauder kicks off Society of Cosmetic Chemists annual meeting discussing epigenetics for anti-aging
11 Dec 2023 --- The 77th Society of Cosmetic Chemists annual meeting in New York has more than 45 speakers showcasing their latest research and innovation. A few of these companies already created some of the most successful products on the market.
This year, topics include beauty innovation, formulation design, microbiome, sustainability, artificial intelligence, new ingredients, biotechnology, color cosmetics, claims & regulatory and photoprotection.
Influencing epigenetics
Dr. Nadine Pernodet, SVP of Global Skin Biology Innovation & Technologies, R&D at Estée Lauder, is presenting “The Future of Skincare: Harnessing Epigenetics, from AntiAging to Age Reversal.”
She discusses how 25% of the aging process is related to genetics while 75% is directly linked to epigenetics.
Epigenetics are modifications that change the expression of genes under specific influences, such as environment and lifestyle, but they do not directly change the DNA sequence. Other factors include where you live, sleep, eat and pollution levels.
Dr. Pernodet stresses that understanding epigenetic signals and changes can enable a new way of supporting positive ones for fighting skin aging and reducing negative ones that cause the opposite.
“Through our over 15 years of research, we will present how skin cell behaviors are influenced by their microenvironment and our macroenvironment and lifestyles, how we can help skin cells fight aging and now have the power to reverse skin cell aging,” she writes.
Digitally aligned
Andi Govindia, CEO and co-founder of Riviter, a market researcher who leverages AI, is also presenting.
In her talk, “How Important is Ingredient Buzz? A Visual and Social Analytics Journey,” she delves into how vital consumer knowledge about product ingredients is and whether their awareness plays a pivotal role in a product’s success.
Using AI, visual search and social analytics techniques, she shares the latest skin care and makeup ingredients alongside what consumers think about their benefits.
Alexander Detre, CEO of USA and Canada at EcoMundo, closes the session with a talk on “Leveraging Technology to Oversee Regulatory Challenges – What Lies at the Heart of Digital Cosmetic Development.” He presents the regulatory landscape, the digitizing of product development and how technology is leveraged.
In the following days, presenters from personal care giants such as Active Concepts, Ashland, BASF, Beiersdorf, Chemyunion, Clariant, Croda, DSM-Firmenich, Evonik, Greentech, Kobo Products, LipoTrue, L’Oréal, Procter & Gamble, Sederma and Symbiome, will showcase latest scientific findings.
