Green beauty strides: Symrise boosts Hydrolite 7 green’s appeal with patent applications
15 Oct 2021 --- Symrise has filed a range of patent applications to boost the “green beauty” appeal of its Hydrolite 7 green, which debuted this past June. The ingredient is 100% bio-based 1,2-alkanediol derived from sustainably sourced castor bean oil, which makes it suitable for a range of product applications.
It is an antioxidant enhancer for increasing the activity of antioxidants such as tocopherol. Moreover, it is a solubilizer for lipophilic cosmetic ingredients and is a product protection enhancer in synergy with many preservatives.
“These patent applications underline the features and benefits for our customers of this novel multifunctional ingredient. Hydrolite 7 green also complements our product protection portfolio, treading the path towards a more sustainable future of cosmetics”, says Balint Koroskenyi, global product manager at Symrise.
Green ingredients
Symrise supports it dedicated years of research and investment to develop a green multifunctional for product protection.
With the patent filings for Hydrolite 7 green, Symrise is demonstrating the effort of its scientific team toward creating a product with a high degree of sustainability, explains Imke Meyer, vice president of global innovation, cosmetic ingredients at Symrise.
Symrise seeks to reduce formulation complexity and is addressing the specific market need, with R&D and numerous tests to study synergism, identify important applications and compositions and generate data.
This allowed the company to file an IP portfolio that showcases the stand-out attributes of the product.
The composition patents highlight the unique properties and synergistic combinations of Hydrolite 7 green with a large selection of cosmetic ingredients, such as actives, UV filters, oils, antioxidants, antimicrobials, etc.
The wide range of compositions covered in the IP will allow Symrise’s customers to leverage the exceptional properties and benefits of this unique multifunctional ingredient in order to create equally exceptional cosmetic formulations of their own.
Multifunctional applications
Hydrolite 7 green is a multifunctional ingredient and a seven-carbon alkanediol which comes from 100% bio-based sources. The formulation is a clear, colorless neat ingredient that can go into a variety of traditional or natural/green cosmetic formulations, and works with all skin types.
In recent years, the green trend has been gaining momentum with growing consumer interest in renewable raw material innovations and finished product development, Symrise says.
At the same time, 1,2-alkanediols have been increasingly used in the personal care industry as multifunctional ingredients since the introduction of Hydrolite 5 by Symrise 30 years ago.
Thus, Hydrolite 7 green offers a response to consumers’ and formulators’ wish for a nature-derived, biodegradable, liquid ingredient with multiple benefits packed into a single molecule. Moreover, it offers good economics and shows important properties at low concentrations.
The distinctive chain length of Hydrolite 7 green enables water solubility and a liquid form that combines easy handling with high performance.
“Symrise R&D has spent years developing Hydrolite 7 green in order to address our customers’ expectations and to meet our high standards of quality,” Meyer notes.
“We were investing in research long before the green market trend emerged, anticipating future opportunities and market shifts.
“The optimal chain length combines strong performance and a liquid form. Due to its sourcing from the castor bean plant, the product is suitable for green labels,” adds Koroskenyi.
“As an ingredient, it can increase the naturality index of conventional formulations. This may provide an alternative to traditional product protection in areas where currently available multifunctionals fail to meet the challenge,” he concludes.
