Probiotic skincare: Mother Dirt reformulates portfolio with ammonia-oxidizing bacteria

03 Dec 2020 --- Probiotic skincare company Mother Dirt is reformulating its entire product line to include the company’s active probiotic system. The system includes patented ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB), which boasts restorative skin health properties. 

AOB is the key ingredient in Mother Dirt's flagship product, AO+ Restorative Mist, which has garnered a fan following throughout the years, according to the company.

Gifts for the skin
Along with the reformulations, Mother Dirt also announced two new skincare kits, arriving in time for the holidays and new year.

The new skincare kits contain Mother Dirt’s Active Probiotic System Starter and Acne Treatment Kits which “keep the peace” and restore the skin’s ecosystem, bringing harmony and balance, the company says.

“We offer the power of live probiotics in the convenience of our newly reformulated kits. We are now offering our Active Probiotic System in two convenient kits for easy skincare, including The PeaceKeeper as our starter kit for all skin types and The Difference for those prone to acne,” says Karin Piscitelli, senior vice president of product and marketing.

A probiotic triad
The PeaceKeeper features a trio of products that repair the damage caused by traditional skincare and rebalance the skin microbiome. When used together, the powerful probiotic extracts in the Probiotic Foaming Cleanser and Probiotic Moisturizing Serum prime skin so the live and active AO+ Restorative Mist can nourish and restore. 

The reformulated range includes patented ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB), which boasts restorative skin health properties.The three-step PeaceKeeper includes a probiotic foaming cleanser. This foam cleanser removes impurities while refreshing and nourishing the skin without stripping or over-drying.

It also includes a probiotic moisturizing serum. This lightweight, dermatologically-approved serum contains a safe-for-skin probiotic blend that locks in moisture and restores balance, leaving a nourished complexion.

The last step is the AO+ restorative mist. The only live and active topical probiotic of its kind, this patented mist is formulated with more than 3 billion CFUs in every bottle, the company supports. 

It interacts with elements naturally found in sweat to biologically balance the microbiome.

The cleanser and non-comedogenic moisturizing serum act as primers and enhance the results of the AO+ restorative mist, giving the biome a probiotic boost that works synergistically.

The Difference kit works as a complete clinically-tested system to treat acne by repairing the damage caused by traditional skincare to rebalance your biome and clarify skin. 

In addition, Mother Dirt is unveiling a new Probiotic Hydrating Conditioner to complement its newly reformulated Probiotic Hydrating Hair Wash. Together this pair is designed to reveal hair that looks shinier, fuller, and feels softer and stronger. 

Skin microbiome innovations
Exploring the potential of the skin microbiome – the community of bacteria and microorganisms that live on the skin – is a rising trend and major industry players are looking into the space. 

Notably, Givaudan’s personal care arm Givaudan Active Beauty unveiled last year the “world’s first” instant microbiome analysis and profiling system, coined i-MAPS. 

Last year, DSM Nutrition’s ventures arm made an equity investment in skin microbiome company S-Biomedic NV, which pioneered “a new approach to the cosmetic and therapeutic potential of the skin microbiome.”

Meanwhile, Symrise and Probi cooperated to deliver probiotic-based cosmetic ingredients. The companies are developing cosmetic products with a Lactobacillus strain, which could hold particular potential for sensitive and dry skin.

Earlier this year, multinational pharmaceutical Bayer and Azitra, a clinical-stage medical dermatology biotech company, partnered in research to identify and characterize skin microbiome bacteria.
