Revieve and The Best You “first” to launch AI-backed medical skincare experience in Canada
08 Aug 2022 --- Revieve has partnered with The Best You to bring a range of skincare products and cosmetic treatments to the Canadian audience, setting a new standard in virtual medical diagnostics.
“Revieve has gained a spot in the beauty technology realm by developing proprietary technology called ‘Mobile Skin Diagnostics,’ a set of computer-vision algorithms and statistical methods which analyze the user’s facial features,” Sampo Parkkinen, CEO and founder at Revieve tells PersonalCareInsights.
“It measures more than 200 sub-metrics and around 20 main metrics with evaluated accuracy and scientific backing that delivers powerful personalization.”
After an in-depth analysis of users’ photographs and answers to a few questions related to their skin type, skin goals and concerns, the algorithm displays a step-by-step guide on products and treatments.
The web technology, available across desktop and mobile devices, also uses expert-designed algorithms to diagnose distinct skincare and beauty-related facial features from specific areas of the user’s face.
“The Best You is the first medical spa in Canada to bring breakthrough AI/AR technology to the industry,” Sebastien Charles, president & COO at The Best You, says regarding the motivation behind the partnership.
“This technology puts the power in the consumers’ hands as they can make informed decisions about their skincare needs and receive recommendations on products that will help them achieve their skincare goals,” he elaborates.
Elaborating the algorithm used, Parkkinen says: “Our AI-powered product recommendations take into account the selfie results, user preferences and geodata and cross-reference them with the brands’ product database to provide personalized recommendations for each user.
“In the background, we use an extensive 30,000 image database as the basis for all CV development.”
The algorithms are trained to recognize some of the most common skin concerns, such as dullness, redness, hyperpigmentation, melasma, acne and many others.
Funding a digital world
It is no news that the world is becoming more technology-driven in recent years. The beauty industry is also keeping up with digital breakthroughs.
Recently, US beauty retailer Ulta Beauty spearheaded Prisma Ventures, a digital innovation fund set to invest US$20 million in emerging technology start-ups that seek to shape future online and in-store experiences.
In addition to monetary investment, Prisma Ventures gives the start-ups access to the retailer’s innovation team, consumer data, and in-market testing possibilities to optimize solutions.
Nykaa made a similar move in collaboration with Estée Lauder, joining forces to create Beauty & You India, a competitive program that supports Indian beauty and personal care start-ups.
Shana Randhava, the VP of this division, explains that the program aims to “harness the entrepreneurial energy in India to advance next-generation beauty brands by presenting opportunities that help put brands on a long-term, sustainable growth path.”
The European Commission also set out a new EU Innovation Agenda, which aims to advance digitalization and secure an environmentally sustainable future for industries including beauty and personal care amid climate and political uncertainties.
