Symrise ramps up 1,2-alkanediols production with new plant in Spain
05 Jan 2022 --- Symrise is opening a new manufacturing site for 1,2-alkanediols in Granada, Spain. The move is meant to support a global growth in demand, particularly expanding Symrise’s production network for the cosmetic ingredient.
“1,2-alkanediols represent multifunctional ingredients for the personal care industry, offering multiple benefits, such as moisturization, emulsion stabilization, solubilization and enhancing product protection,” Dr. Balint Koroskenyi, Symrise’s global production manager, tells PersonalCareInsights.
The company is also upgrading the plant to meet the quality guidelines and production requirements for its 1,2-alkanediol production. Production of the cosmetic ingredient has already begun, and first trials have shown the manufacturing plant meets Symrise’s production standards.
A popular skincare ingredient
1,2-alkanediols are some of the “fastest growing cosmetic ingredients used for product protection,” Dr. Koroskenyi highlights.
Symrise is already producing these ingredients in Holzminden, Germany, and Monterrey, Mexico. The new production line in Granada means the Spain-based plant now produces cosmetic ingredients in addition to many fragrance ingredients from sustainable and renewable raw materials.
“1,2-alkanediols have been experiencing a strong and growing European and global market demand due to their multifunctionality, strong benefits, versatility, broad compatibility and safety,” Dr. Koroskenyi continues.
“All major cosmetic product categories and formulation types use them,” he notes of the cosmetic solvent and active agent.
According to Symrise, the new plant will help keep up with local and global consumer demand. The company eyes the new plant as having the opportunity to drive its customers’ growth within Europe and around the world.
The location chosen for the new plant holds several opportunities for Symrise and its customers, says Dr. Koroskenyi.
This includes, “its proximity to the Holzminden site, which facilitates communication, transport and resource-sharing thus supporting our sustainability approach,” he says. Additionally, its location in Spain and within the EU “can support local and regional customers with logistical advantages,” Dr. Koroskenyi notes.
Indeed, localizing production has become a point of focus for companies, as COVID-19 makes long-distance supply-chain stability more tedious and uncertain. Recently, Beiersdorf opened a new production plant in Leipzig, creating better supply-chain security for its customers.
“The location of the additional production of 1,2-alkanediols lies within a site where we produce other Symrise ingredients as well, namely a broad range of fragrance ingredients from renewable resources,” he emphasizes.
The expansion demonstrates that Symrise is “committed to its customers, to growth and investment,” says Dr. Joern Andreas, president of cosmetic ingredients at Symrise.
The company says it has also begun investments to set up new production lines for its Hydrolite cosmetic multifunctional ingredients.
