Footprint technology: Artificially intelligent bath mat that doubles up as a weighing scale set to make a splash
05 Jan 2022 --- The BBalance Bath Mat, an artificial intelligence (AI) supported “smart” bath mat is slated to hit retail shelves by spring 2022. Its weighing system is said to adapt to users’ movement patterns to ensure reliable weight measurement, regardless of minor variations in positions by the user.
According to the CES 2022 Innovation Awards, the BBalance Bath Mat merges more than two health risk and wellness factors and coaches the user to make improvements to their daily routines.
The mat is water-resistant, connects via bluetooth and wifi, and has an eight-month battery life.
BBalance app
BBalance is supported using the BBalance app for mobile phones, allowing users to monitor their changes and progress.
The app also offers daily coaching for people to “achieve [their] personal best,” the company says.
Intended both for single users and families, the mat can differentiate between family members ranging from young children to elders. Users are
distinguished by footprint, and a personalized experience and goals of each household member are provided by Al.A market beyond the individual user
BBalance’s internet connection also allows for updates to be sent to parents or medical providers regarding a users’ physical development and progress.
“Several hospitals are currently beta-testing BBalance prototypes, constantly collecting data verified by a team of doctors to reinforce the accuracy of our algorithms,” says Jean-Marc Druesne, CEO of BBalance.
Recognizing users via footprint, the device measures weight, balance and stability. BBalance automatically collects users’ data and reportedly evaluates posture, body weight composition and BMI.
BBalance claims it can assist in monitoring the “effectiveness and compliance” of post-treatment recommendations for those living with conditions like scoliosis. However, the efficacy of this specific BBalance mechanism is currently being reviewed by the company.
According to its makers, the mat uses AI and “pressure-mapping” technologies, which are hidden beneath a removable and washable cotton bath mat. Aside from branding, the mat is virtually “indistinguishable” from traditional, non-AI-supported mats. It is also made with anti-slip backing.
The BBalance Bath Mat provides users with “actionable insights” for reaching weight and fitness goals and tips for achieving better posture and muscle tone. The company claims the device will also help alleviate anxiety in people who find it difficult to grapple with normal daily weight fluctuations.
AI has become a market mainstay recently, with companies like LuluLab, MDalgorithms, Avon and Givaudan embracing the technology for its consumers.
