WellSpring takes hypochlorous acid mass market with seven launches

WellSpring Consumer Healthcare is taking hypochlorous acid (HOCl) out of the prestige facial mist aisle and into mass retail, launching seven products across its A+D, Bactine, VH Essentials, and Solarcaine brands. The range covers baby, sun, and intimate care, and first aid.

Hypochlorous acid built consumer interest on social media and dermatologist recommendations rather than through the drug channel. WellSpring is now applying it across seven SKUs in four established over-the-counter (OTC) brands rather than building a standalone HOCl line. 

“Hypochlorous acid is changing the way consumers think about skin health by delivering a gentle yet highly effective solution for a wide range of everyday concerns and needs,” says Oliver Sanders, VP of marketing at WellSpring Consumer Healthcare. 

“As interest in science-backed skin care continues to accelerate, we saw an opportunity to bring this remarkable, highly effective ingredient to first aid, baby care, and women’s intimate care through trusted brands they already rely on.”

The range is on shelves now at Amazon, Walmart, Walgreens, Target, and CVS.

Beyond the face mist

The seven launches are split across four brands. Under A+D, the company is introducing a Hydrogel Spray Advanced Dermatitis Care, an Antimicrobial Spray for Diaper Change, and a Gentle Face Relief Cleanser for Little Ones. 

Bactine gets an Antimicrobial Wound Care Hydrogel, VH Essentials adds an Intimate Cleansing Spray and a Bikini Skin Soothing Gel, and Solarcaine takes an Advanced Burn Relief Hydrogel. 

WellSpring positions the dermatitis spray for itch, redness, and irritation associated with eczema, rosacea, psoriasis, and dermatitis. The company says the spray carries acceptance from the National Eczema Association and the National Rosacea Society and recognition from the National Psoriasis Foundation.Sanders sees hypochlorous acid changing how consumers think about everyday skin health. 

The diaper-change spray, which the company describes as a first for the category, is pitched for cleansing after changes. The VH Essentials spray is pH-balanced and targeted as post-workout, travel, and post-shave use.

HOCl’s commercial pitch has rested on being antimicrobial without stinging, which is the same argument OTC first aid and baby care brands have been making for decades. What WellSpring is betting on is the ingredient’s current consumer search equity.

Trend tracker Spate, in its Ingredient Trends Report with the New York Society of Cosmetic Chemists, put hypochlorous acid’s year-over-year growth in body care at 2,100%. Separately, data from booking platform Fresha puts the ingredient at more than 90,000 average monthly searches, a 50% year-over-year increase.

WellSpring’s move tests whether that interest converts in the drug channel, where the shopper arrives with a problem rather than a routine. The company frames the range as delivering the ingredient’s benefits without a premium price tag.

Derm and influencer positioning

The launches’ marketing runs through a paid partnership with board-certified dermatologist Dr. Nkem Ugonabo and reality TV personality and podcast host Ashley Iaconetti Haibon, who are producing educational social content for the brands. 

“Hypochlorous acid is one of my favorite ingredients to recommend to patients,” says Ugonabo. “On top of being a highly effective antimicrobial which helps soothe irritation, reduce bacteria and calm redness on the skin, it is also very gentle and well tolerated by most skin types.”

The pairing is a familiar structure for OTC launches, leaning on a trend active — clinical credibility from the dermatologist, category permission, and reach from the influencer. WellSpring says the content goes live this month, with a launch event for tastemakers in New York City, US, to follow.
