BASF creates Tinomax CC for improved sun care feel and appeal to eco-conscious consumers
13 Sep 2023 --- BASF has launched Tinomax CC, a compound designed for skin and sun care to offer a significant sensory improvement due to its homogeneous particle shape.
The sunscreen is in the form of an off-white powder. BASF claims it can enhance UV protection with SPF and UVA via light birefringence (double refraction). In addition, tests have shown that formulations containing Tinomax CC tend to be significantly less sticky and greasy during application than formulations without this ingredient.
“With Tinomax CC, we’re giving our customers the opportunity to meet the growing demands of the sun care market,” says Ulrich Issberner, director market development Sun Care/HBO Europe at BASF.
“Alongside our high-performance UV filters and natural-based emollients, emulsifiers and polymers, the new product derived from natural sources is another step toward the advanced formulations of tomorrow.”
Environmental sun protection
BASF recommends Tinomax CC for formulations containing organic soluble UV filters and those containing particles dispersed in the oil phase. BASF says Tinomax significantly improves sensorial performance, especially at higher SPFs, while not having a whitening effect on the skin.
Tinomax CC meets the growing demand for multifunctional solutions with improved SPF and UVA protection, according to the company. BASF’s latest addition to its sun care portfolio was also made to meet customers’ sustainability goals.
The chemicals giant stresses that consumers are demanding multifunctional solutions that enable an “intentional approach to the environment,” driving conscious beauty consumption.
“Consumers are not only looking for more benefits for their skin and the associated sun protection but also a lower environmental impact,” says Issberner.
The functionalized particle is of 100% natural origin content. It helps to improve the ecotoxicological profile of formulations, which BASF says, makes it a perfect complement to modern and environmentally friendly formulations.
The BASF division of Care Chemicals offers a broad range of ingredients for personal care. The division’s high-performance product portfolio includes surfactants, emulsifiers, polymers, emollients, chelating agents, cosmetic active ingredients and UV filters.
Sunscreen developments
In recent headlines, Germany proposed that two benzotriazole UV absorbers are substances of very high concern. The European Chemicals Agency opened a public consultation on these substances. In the past, these substances have been flagged for their persistence and bioaccumulation, toxicity to aquatic organisms and potential allergic relations.
Personal Care Insights recently brought together the latest sun care research on antioxidants, sharing findings on the enzymes superoxide dismutase, yellow herb Gentiana lutea and red seaweed Gelidium corneum. The enzymes’ function was found to have “obvious” sunscreen and radiation protection.
