Biosynthetic Technologies debuts multi-faceted castor oil-based emollient BioEstolide 250-100
03 May 2022 --- Biobased synthetic compounds producer Biosynthetic Technologies has introduced BioEstolide 250-100, a non-GMO castor derived, environmentally friendly and vegan emollient, especially for personal care and cosmetics formulations.
The multifunctional ingredient provides shine, moisturization and inherent UV blocking properties for skin and hair. It is noted to create a barrier that retains moisture and protection from heat in hair applications.
“The market needs sustainable and biobased ingredients that deliver performance,” says Dr. Matthew Kriech, COO at Biosynthetic Technologies.
“As such, this novel technology provides formulators with an excellent sustainable alternative to silicones for various applications, ranging from hair care to skincare to color cosmetics,” adds Mark Miller Neubauer, CEO at Biosynthetic Technologies.
The ingredient is being showcased at the NYSCC Suppliers Day in New York.
Sensory and sustainable profile
BioEstolide 250-100 is said to deliver an extended shelflife, enhanced sensory profile, negative carbon footprint and is Halal and Kosher certified.
“It [BioEstolide 250-100] is a sustainable cosmetic ingredient that delivers all the benefits of castor oil with the additional benefits of a superior sensory profile and a Natural Origin Index (NOI) of 1.0,” shares Neubauer.
Biosynthetic Technologies also observed improved skin elasticity, leaving a soft and smooth, fast-absorbing, dry and oil-free touch.
Kriech remarks: “On top of that, manufacturers are looking for more sustainable products that can facilitate the corporate initiatives of carbon neutrality and improved Environmental, Social and Corporate Governance (ESG).”
The ingredient falls under the company’s BioEstolides portfolio. BioEstolides are created from organic fatty acids from different bio-derived oils.
The commercial production of BioEstolide 250-100 is currently in process, with samples available on the company’s website. BioEstolides are available through Univar Solutions.
Sustainable supply chains
The company explains that one critical way to ensure environmentally friendly products is to ensure that the production process is fair.
“Biosynthetic Technologies Estolides provide farmers with a pathway out of poverty. They don’t compete with food crops, and no forest habitat is destroyed or altered to plant the crops,” states Biosynthetic Technologies.
It adds that the geographic location where the castor is sourced is “highly optimized,” also using the full waste streams from castor oil production.
Emphasizing its understanding and role in environmental sustainability, it says: “As such, our manufacturing facility is operating with a negative carbon footprint.”
