Cinematic beauty: Cosmetic brands debut Avatar, Wakanda Forever and Wizard of Oz collections
29 Nov 2022 --- Notable makeup launches this month are capturing movie magic, which reaches beyond the silver screen to glam up franchise audiences. Fandoms of Avatar, Wakanda Forever and Wizard of Oz can now experiment with glosses, blushes and paints inspired by the characters of their favorite films.
Much like the resurgence of celebrity-branded product developments, Hollywood film-inspired beauty is trending for its mainstream appeal. PersonalCareInsights spotlights these latest launches, which invoke the set and costume designs of box office-leading classics.
Pandora’s paradise palette
Promoting the release of the sequel to director James Cameron’s Avatar – Avatar: The Way of Water – NYX Professional Makeup has released a vegan makeup palette styled in the vibrant, bioluminescent hues of the fictional Na’vi tribe from the planet Pandora.

The limited edition assortment, produced in collaboration with 20th Century Studios and Disney, features a number of new vegan and cruelty-free palettes, highlighters, lipsticks, glosses, paints and setting spray.
“As a beauty brand known for launching the boldest pro-level pigments, we’re thrilled to collaborate with 20th Century Studios’ Avatar: The Way of Water to help bring the vibrant and colorful world of Pandora to life through this unique collection,” says Yann Joffredo, global brand president at NYX Professional Makeup.
The collection comes with 24 shades reflecting the lush forests and illuminating seas of Pandora. Alongside this set, the Pandoran Paradise Palette offers six highlighters and blushes.
For creating a full look that catches the light, the collection includes Biolume Highlighter Sticks, inspired by the Na’vi clans.
The set comprises Paper Lipsticks in two bold shades inspired by the fierce, regal leaders in the film. These are accompanied by Luminescent Lip Glosses with three “electrifying” shades.
Meanwhile, a pigment-packed Na’vi Paint in the official Avatar blue allows for striking face painting, while the Metkayina Mist setting spray is infused with marine ingredients.
In addition to offering a vegan and cruelty-free range of products, the palettes, lipsticks, facial mist and paint of this collection are all created with recycled materials, minimizing existing waste.
Colors of Wakanda
Franchise Black Panther: Wakanda Forever has inspired its own makeup collection. Beginning this month, MAC Cosmetics entered a limited-edition collaboration with Marvel to honor the second installment of the franchise, which premiered on November 11.

In both the campaign and in the collection itself, there is an emphasis on vibrant, impactful makeup that serves as an intentional celebration of melanated skin tones.
“Like the vibrant world of Wakanda, #MACxWakandaForever features lavish, saturated hues that look fantastic on everyone – especially those with rich skin tones,” comments Fatima Thomas, senior artist at MAC, who helped to design the collection.
MAC’s lineup comprises four cream lipsticks and liquid lipsticks, gold lip gloss, an eight-pan eyeshadow palette, two liquid eyeliners, one kohl eyeliner, two brushes, two shades of highlighting powder and a makeup bag.
The Black Panther collection captures the striking visual appeal of the film’s costumes and set designs with a stunning purple-enshrouded product lineup.
The packaging features graphic prints and shiny finishes, while many of the products inside also feature iconography of the movie, which are embossed into the powders and on the tubes beneath each lipstick bullet.
Rich jewel tones – such as purples, emeralds, golds, sapphires and rubies – comprise much of the collection, and there is an emphasis on intense pigment payoff across the line. Female leads are the focus of this latest film, and the artists behind the makeup looks drew inspiration from traditions of tribes across Africa.
To celebrate the MAC x Wakanda Forever collaboration, the brand also released a series of campaign images featuring bold makeup looks created by artist Raisa Flowers using products from the collection.
Kylie Cosmetics, launched by reality star Kylie Jenner, has teamed up with Warner Brothers Discovery Global Consumer Products to introduce a limited edition makeup collection inspired by the classic film The Wizard of Oz.
The range comprises a pressed powder palette, including a blush, highlighter and eyeshadow named after the movie characters. It also comes with a matte lip paint set, metallic lipstick and transformative lip tint.
These products are marketed as clean, vegan and cruelty-free. According to Innova Market Insights data, cruelty-free personal care product launches have notably more than doubled from 2017 to 2021, with Europe having the most cruelty-free launches at 44% of the total products analyzed.
The Kylie Wizard of Oz lip tint is described as an emerald green formula that “transforms upon contact with lips to deliver a unique pink tint that’s all your own.” The product incorporates squalene and an ester complex to care for the lips and leave them glossy without stickiness.
The collection was launched a few months following the announcement of a modern remake of the classic movie that is currently in progress.
“The Wizard of Oz was one of my favorite movies growing up, and it has been so amazing to create this collection inspired by the iconic film,” says Jenner.
Kylie Cosmetics has also previously launched makeup collections themed after Batman, The Grinch and A Nightmare on Elm Street.
