Conscious perfumery: Coty introduces refillable fragrance, gains C2C certification
15 Nov 2022 --- Coty is releasing its first refillable fragrance, Chloé Rose Naturelle Intense, which is marketed as having a lower environmental impact after having undergone an independent full life-cycle assessment (LCA). The 100% natural origin fragrance was also awarded a Silver Level Cradle to Cradle (C2C) Certified Material Health Certificate, which is used to verify the safety and health of a product’s composition.
According to Coty, its reusable fragrance bottles can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 65%, water consumption by 67%, energy consumption by 66% and mineral resource consumption by 75%.
“Chloé stands for meaningful products for society and the planet. Chloé Rose Naturelle Intense embodies these values,” says Constantin Sklavenitis, chief Prestige brands officer at Coty.
“[Environmental] sustainability is our ultimate driver of innovation at Coty and this launch is another step forward in contributing to our corporate strategy of Beauty That Lasts.”
Evaluating environmental footprint
The refillable bottles of the Chloé Rose Naturelle Intense demonstrated lower environmental impacts across all Product LCA indicators, Coty highlights.
EVEA, an independent organization, carried out Chloé Rose Naturelle Intense’s environmental footprint LCA to evaluate the impact of the bottle and its refill, from the selection of raw materials to the end of the product’s life.
In comparison to five conventional 50 ml bottles, the environmental impact of a 100 ml bottle and a 150 ml refill was assessed by EVEA.
Building on C2C certification
The new fragrance and its certification come at the heels of Sun Sensitive, a “clean, vegan and ocean-friendly” sun care line from Lancaster that was the first ever to receive a Silver C2C Certified Material Health Certificate from the Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute.
CK Everyone, was the first to receive C2C Certified Material Health Certificate in all five of the key sustainability metrics.
Collaborating for eco-friendly scent
Coty established a partnership with LanzaTech in 2022 after reinventing scent sampling in 2021 with the touch-free fragrance tester, which simultaneously decreased waste, improved safety and enhanced data collection.
The partnership has created ethanol manufactured from captured carbon emissions for fragrance items.
LanzaTech absorbs industrial emissions and converts the waste gases into a new, more sustainable supply of ethanol suitable for use in fragrances.
Fragrance and cruelty-free moves
Among other recent company developments, Coty’s fragrance division released its financial results for the fiscal year 2023’s first quarter, which ended on September 30, 2022. The company’s financial performance remained strong, with Coty’s Prestige fragrance segment maintaining its strong momentum.
This follows the company’s financial results for the fourth quarter of the fiscal year 2022 reflected an increase in sales of 10%, driven by its fragrance category.
The company also strengthened its strategic partnership with Cruelty Free International, an international organization working to end animal testing. The company’s brands, Rimmel, Manhattan and Risqué, have been recognized by the Cruelty Free International Leaping Bunny Program.
