Firmenich perfumery collection 2022 features ‘green chemistry’ ingredients
04 Mar 2022 --- Perfume and taste company Firmenich is unveiling its latest Sharing Innovation 2022 collection of perfumery ingredients. Firmenich’s green science and technology are reflected in this year’s collection of five ingredients.
These ingredients include three newly revealed ingredients previously exclusive to Firmenich: a Lily-of-the-Valley note that scores high on green chemistry; a 100% renewable ingredient made with biotechnology; and a high-fidelity natural Rose created using a cold concentration technique.
“Firmenich aims to share its innovations by releasing selected Firmenich signature ingredients, some of which are captives, to ignite creativity and broaden perfume palettes worldwide,” Julien Firmenich, VP of product strategy and promotion at Firmenich tells PersonalCareInsights.
Additionally, a synthetic molecule manufactured from repurposed materials is included in the collection, as well as an ingredient with full traceability due to the company’s digital platform Path2Farm.
Every year, the company creates an assortment of Firmenich’s signature ingredients to inspire innovation and broaden perfume palettes worldwide.
Ensuring ingredient traceability
Path2Farm is Firmenich’s proprietary digital traceability application for natural ingredients sourcing, from producer to factory.
“The digital application provides access to secure and reliable information, ensuring end-to-end traceability and transparency through farm geo-plotting,” says Firmenich.
“The dataset available on the platform includes farmers’ profiling, field locations, agricultural practices and environmental data. Path2Farm is a part of Firmenich’s Naturals Together platform and adds an advanced capability to the Group’s responsible sourcing strategy.”
The Sharing Innovation 2022 collection includes the vanilla planifolia Madagascar infusion P2F ingredient with a sensual and animalic note that enhances the gourmand bottom note in floral and amber compositions. It’s sourced in Madagascar and fully traceable through the digital program Path2Farm.
This new platform joins the Naturals Together as an initiative to provide customers and clients with total access to Firmenich’s ingredients’ complete production chain, from farmer to final product, including farm geo-plotting, farmer profiling and supply chain tracking.
Zoning in on green chemistry
The collection includes the Muguissimo – a new floral Muguet note derived from green synthesis that serves as a Lily-of-the-Valley ingredient that is both elegant and competitive, the company states. The ingredient has a natural cyclamen petal look and light and anisic undertones.
“Muguissimo serves as an elegant and competitive Lily-of-the-valley ingredient. It has a strong sustainability profile as it is readily biodegradable – ≥60% within 28 days and from 10% to 60% within ten days – and has a green chemistry score above 70%,” Firmenich explains.
“The green chemistry score is a ratio that covers most of the remaining green chemistry principles in addition to renewable carbon and biodegradability.”
“Firmenich was an early adopter of green chemistry principles. More generally, for Firmenich, the future of sustainable perfumery ingredients will be built on four platforms including green chemistry, biotechnology, consciously-sourced naturals and digitalization,” adds Firmenich.
Synthetics, biotechnology and naturals
The following ingredients are also included in the Sharing Innovation 2022 collection to inspire innovators and consumers all across the world:
The Sylvamber is a fresh, modern woody scent with cedarwood, powdery and ambery overtones. The company says that Sylvamber energizes scents by adding volume, grace, warmth, and sophistication to any blend.
Also, the biotechnology-derived Z11 HD is a persistent and sensual dry woody note with a beautiful ambery facet. Z11 HD intensifies the signature of a scent. Its approach blends white biotechnology with green chemistry to produce a 100% renewable and biodegradable ingredient that provides clean, consistent quality while reducing the environmental effects.
Lastly, featured in the naturals section, the Rose Damascena Firad has a floral, rosy, spicy, honey and balsamic note. The firad-exclusive profile is light and refreshing, reminiscent of eau de rose with overtones of litchi.
This natural rose extract is prepared from a cold concentration of the water-soluble volatile components in Bulgarian rose water. It is high in odorant molecules.
Tracking Firmenich’s previous perfumery moves
Firmenich previously released a report on its sustainability performance and it unveiled Breath In – a new fragrance that tapped into clean beauty. Also, the company announced its first-half performance results for the fiscal year 2022, showcasing an 11.7% solid growth for its fine fragrances category.
The fragrance and taste company also expanded its geographical reach to the Middle East with a US$51 million investment into constructing a perfumery plant in Turkey. Firmenich also partnered with retail brand Harmay to develop its fine fragrance category among Chinese consumers.
