Groupe Berkem unifies R&D operations to boost plant-based chemistry innovation
Key takeaways
- Groupe Berkem is centralizing 10 R&D labs in Blanquefort with a €1.26 million investment.
- The 651 m² hub aims to enhance collaboration and academic partnerships.
- Two upgraded labs will boost research in cosmetics and nutraceuticals.
Groupe Berkem is centralizing 10 labs under one roof by transferring its biology and R&D laboratories for Health, Beauty, and Nutrition from its Gardonne site, France, to its Blanquefort headquarters.
The move is part of a €1.26 million (US$1.48 million) investment to accelerate innovation in plant-based chemistry, improve internal collaboration, and reinforce partnerships with academic institutions.
The company specializes in bio-based solutions and says the 651 m² R&D space will serve as a scientific hub supporting product development in cosmetics, nutraceuticals, food, and phytopharmaceuticals.
The strategic realignment brings together a range of synthesis, extraction, biology, and formulation teams.
Centralized collaboration
Converging the 10 laboratories aims to streamline R&D efforts and encourage integrated project workflows.
Groupe Berkem emphasizes that bringing technicians, engineers, and PhDs together at a modern facility will enhance productivity and support talent acquisition.
“We are bringing our scientific teams together on a single, modern site to support our growth, facilitate recruitment, and strengthen our collaborations with the University of Bordeaux,” says Olivier Fahy, CEO of Groupe Berkem.
The analysis laboratory will be a cross-functional lab to support synthesis, extraction, and formulation teams. The relocation also aims to improve the group’s capacity to meet client needs in rapidly evolving markets by simplifying internal communication and boosting research agility.
Enhanced capabilities
Two laboratories will receive expanded functions among the 10 units now operating from Blanquefort.
The analysis laboratory will be a cross-functional lab to support synthesis, extraction, and formulation teams. Additional instruments have been installed to provide deeper product characterization.
Meanwhile, with upgraded equipment and scientific personnel, the biology laboratory will focus on understanding the mechanisms of action behind the plant extracts.
“Our lab allows us to develop ingredients with scientifically proven performance in both cosmetics and nutraceuticals,” says Laurent Cubizolles, R&D and Finished Product Regulatory Affairs director.
The company states its bio-based ingredients are designed to improve the performance of chemical formulations while minimizing environmental and health impacts. Fahy adds that the project “fully illustrates our commitment to placing R&D at the heart of our growth strategy.”
