Lycored’s Lycomato may alleviate oxidative stress in skin, study finds
03 Feb 2022 --- Lycored’s tomato extract, Lycomato, is effective in limiting MMP-1 secretion, an enzyme responsible for collagen damage, by approximately 50%. Additionally, it may help restore pro-collagen secretion.
This is according to researchers from the Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, Israel, who discovered that carotenoids – found in tomatoes – can protect dermal fibroblasts (cells in the dermis layer of skin) from oxidative stress.
Therefore, supplementing with Lycomato can minimize oxidative stress-induced damage, resulting in improved skin health and appearance.
“We’ve long known about the many links between the components of our diet and the health of our skin. This study provides new evidence that the carotenoids and other phytonutrients in Lycomato offer significant protection against the damage caused by oxidative stress,” says Dr. Karin Hermoni, head of science & product at Lycored.
“It also demonstrates that it’s a perfect partner for collagen in skin health supplements, and anti-aging products in particular.”
Better results with rosemary combination
During the study, researchers observed that pre-treatment with rosemary extract also reduced MMP-1 secretion and boosted pro-collagen secretion to baseline levels.
Although both Lycomato and rosemary extract provided considerable benefits on their own, when they were combined, their effects were amplified.

The researchers add that oxidative stress is caused by various environmental variables and can also arise as people age. They also observe that the study findings may be relevant in treating chronic inflammation as oxidative stress can also cause this.
Plants extract for skin health
Lycored has been making strides with its tomato-based skincare solutions. The company’s Lumenato ingestible skincare extract protected the skin from oxidation, according to prior research. Lumenato is made from golden tomatoes and was also shown – in a separate study – to prevent the deterioration of type III collagen.
