Lycored’s nutrient complex for skin health features in Herbalife’s NPD LycoGlow

19 Jul 2021 --- Lycored’s proprietary nutrient complex Lycoderm features in Herbalife Nutrition’s latest skin product, dubbed LycoGlow. 

LycoGlow helps support skin smoothness, brightness and firmness for an all-over healthy glow that starts from within, according to Herbalife.

“Lycoderm is our proprietary blend of tomato phytonutrients and rosemary leaf. Because it offers optimal concentrations of lycopene, phytoene and phytofluene, as well as carnosic acid and vitamins A and E for skin health and appearance, it’s suitable for ingestible skincare supplements,” notes Zev Ziegler, vice president of brand and marketing at Lycored, tells NutritionInsight.

The launch is in line with “our philosophy is that healthy skin starts on the inside,” says Ziegler. 

“A growing number of consumers share this philosophy, and they’re turning to plant-based ingredients like tomato-derived carotenoids to nourish their skin.”

While skin health claims continue to grow, many beauty-from-within offerings are also embracing other positionings such as immunity, bone health and wellness. Collagen and hyaluronic acid are key ingredients in this sector, but botanicals are also on the rise.

Holistic skin care
Lycoderm is a blend of tomato phytonutrients and rosemary leaf that offers optimal concentrations of lycopene, phytoene, phytofluene and carnosic acid. 

A growing number of consumers are turning to plant-based ingredients like tomato-derived carotenoids to nourish their skin.The synergistic combination of these nutrients helps balance the skin’s response to sun exposure and environmental stress.

LycoGlow is available in a softgel that can be consumed daily and is designed to complement a holistic skin care routine, supporting texture and appearance for smoother and more radiant-looking skin.

Gummies and softgels are popular among consumers, with NutritionInsight recently reporting on novel delivery formats for ingestible skincare.

In line with these trends, Ibi Montesino, senior vice president and managing director of North America at Herbalife Nutrition, says: “Herbalife Skin LycoGlow taps into the growing consumer demand for ingestible skincare products containing plant-based ingredients rooted in research and sprouted from science.”

Key demographics
Looking at Ingestible skincare broadly, there’s appeal to a wide range of consumer groups, says Ziegler. However, millennials and gen Z tend to be more receptive to the concept than older consumers.

Another key demographic is men. “Our research shows that a significant proportion of males between the ages of 18 and 35 believe it is more important for men to look good than women. This suggests there is an increasing market for products that can help millennial men achieve this goal.”

“A big part of our movement to is challenging conventional standards of beauty, which is inspired by the fact that ingestible skincare and nutrition don’t see skin color, race or age. It only sees us at the cellular level, offering a liberating platform for inclusivity, positivity and equality. We've long believed that people of all ages and skin types have a right to wellness in all its forms,” Ziegler highlights.

Skin health pedigree
Lycored offers a range of ingestible skin care ingredients such as Lumenato. Recent research indicated that the tomato extract can help prevent the loss of type III collagen. 

The company also released research, which noted that active consumers are looking for supplements that can promote a healthier relationship between their skin and the sun.

In similar moves, Pomanox, a pomegranate concentrate from Euromed, has been shown to improve various skin health parameters.

Meanwhile, Givaudan Active Beauty unveiled Zanthalene, a scalable natural active ingredient, that can provide well-aging effects and soothing benefits.
