One-stop-shop: Atelier unveils cloud-based data platform for beauty manufacturers
01 May 2023 --- Atelier is equipping beauty manufacturers with a “world-first” platform expediting product development by four times. It is reportedly the first consumer packaged goods manufacturing platform to apply cloud technology to streamline a database of vetted packaging manufacturers, sustainable material suppliers, formulation chemists and over 35,000 ingredients.
“Atelier’s novel approach to manufacturing data isn’t just a creative and commercial unlock for brands, it also offers brands the ability to make products in line with their ethics and values,” says Nick Benson, founder of Atelier.
Benson elaborates that the platform is witnessing increasing creative outputs from beauty brands and Atelier is helping new market entrants achieve their goals. “After partnering with us, we’re seeing these brands do big deals with amazing retailers. Early brands are getting into Ulta and Credo, Farfetch and Mecca,” continues Benson.
The platform can help manufacturers to develop bespoke products without having to source, establish and manage individual supply chains. Designed products are delivered to brands’ distribution centers, ready to sell at scale.
Atelier claims its new platform is the world’s first 3D packaging and design and production tool. Users can design shelf-ready packaging with the platform’s Artwork Application feature. They first download the dieline, lay out the design, upload it to the platform and can instantly see the virtual rendering of their packaging design.
The users can also request samples to test the packaging’s look and feel. Manufacturers produce the samples within two-three weeks, which are then sent to the users for feedback. “Iteration is the path to product perfection,” Atelier details while sharing that the users can guide the outcome through feedback.
Atelier, headquartered in Sydney, Australia, is now accessible to beauty brands in the US with an office in Los Angeles, and a global manufacturing network. It details that the US contributes 34% of the global cosmetics market.
In addition to “supercharging” brands’ manufacturing capabilities, Benson and co-founder Nick Hudson aim to provide “greater oversight and transparency for global supply chains to improve sustainability and reduce exploitation.”
Cloud database
Atelier details that it is the first consumer packaged goods manufacturing platform to use digital twins and the same database technology as Facebook and Amazon: semantically enriched graph databases that virtually connect global manufacturers into a single network.
Manufacturers’ capabilities become composable data blocks, allowing brands to view the entire market offering and develop novel products from multiple suppliers through a single interface. Atelier calls this composable manufacturing.
“It expedites brands’ product development and manufacturing timelines by four times while maximizing their creative output to compete in a US$500 billion+ industry with an estimated annual growth of 3.80% (CAGR 2023-2027),” Atelier shares.
Easing supply chain disruptions
Atelier says it is “ushering in the future of manufacturing” by giving brands the tools to create the products they want, to create supply chains that honor their values, to create faster, more capital-efficient outcomes and, in turn, be a contributing force in the solving of some of the world’s existential threats.
“Trade war, COVID-19, energy crises. The world’s supply chains are fragile and the cost of this fragility has been observed in recent years,” it states.
“Our systems of production are entangled in our greatest existential threats. From plastic waste and renewable energy to global food production and the delivery of cold chain vaccines. How we make things is critical to our survival, yet it drives devastating outcomes across ecologies and communities.”
Atelier believes that manufacturing is critical and a “vehicle” to grow and sustain a higher standard of living. With that focus, the platform allows users to create any beauty, health or wellness product at scale, on demand.
