Polish scientists have developed and patented microscopic protective capsules that allow live probiotic bacteria to survive in cosmetics for over a year. The breakthrough is considered to overcome one of the biggest challenges of formulating probiotic skin care, and taps into the growing trend of microbiome-targeted cosmetics.
The capsule technology solves a central paradox of probiotic cosmetics. Until now, the preservatives a formula would need to keep the product safe from harmful bacteria would also simultaneously kill off any beneficial live bacteria added to it.
The core of the Polish innovation is an alginate microcapsule, smaller than 100 μmin diameter, which acts as a shield. The natural polymer shell is derived from brown algae and works to protect the living bacteria from preservatives while the product is on the shelf.
The capsule is designed to break down only after the product is applied to the skin, releasing the live bacteria where they are needed.
When testing the capsules, the encapsulated bacteria remained viable in cosmetic formulations for over 12 months. Without the capsule, they survived for seven days.
According to the research team, the technology is ready for commercialization, and they have secured a patent.

Industry application
The researchers note that the technology has practical benefits for manufacturers. Because the capsules are microscopic, they can be incorporated into standard cosmetic formulas without requiring alterations to texture, appearance, or performance.
Manufacturers can therefore integrate the technology into their existing production lines without having to invest heavily in new equipment.
Beyond general skin care, the researchers note that the technology could be beneficial to people whose hands are frequently exposed to harsh disinfectants and soaps, such as health care workers, food service employees, and laboratory staff.
