Symrise acquires minority stake in Synergio to further natural antimicrobials
07 Feb 2023 --- Symrise Cosmetic Ingredients has partnered with Synergio in a minority interest acquisition to accelerate the development of natural antimicrobial solutions.
A biotech company at heart, Synergio specializes in developing natural and sustainable solutions using plant-based technology for consumer goods products. The investment is a strategic step by Symrise to expand its position in the product protection business of the personal care segment.
“The investment in Synergio signifies our commitment to expand our cosmetic ingredients portfolio and strengthen our leadership in modern product protection,” says Dr. Joern Andreas, president of scent and care at Symrise.
Symrise has acquired a minority ownership in Synergio with the possibility of acquiring a majority stake in Synergio’s share capital in the future.
Earlier this year, Symrise invested in US incubator Ignite Venture Studio to expand its beauty, health, wellness and personal care portfolio.
Natural solutions
The Symrise group leverages more than 100 years of knowledge in developing cosmetic ingredients and expertise in combining nature and science, including skin and hair biology.
Founded in Jerusalem in 2009, Synergio owns comprehensive expertise in natural antimicrobial combinations obtained by sustainable sourcing. The biotech company develops next-gen plant bioactives for healthier and more sustainable personal care and cosmetic products.
“Entering a partnership with Symrise provided a unique opportunity to further develop our biotechnologies for the beauty market,” says Dr. Rachel Lutz, CEO at Synergio.
“Together, we will use new and advanced technology to create sustainable products that will respond to the needs of customers and global stakeholders while meeting regulatory requirements.”
Core technologies include high-performance broad-spectrum natural antimicrobials that are distributed worldwide. Using a data-driven and biochemistry-based computational platform, Synergio leverages a deep understanding of plant bioactives.
“Synergio’s bioactives fit seamlessly into our product protection portfolio. It allows us to offer customers the newest and most innovative sustainable plant-based beauty solutions,” says Andreas.
The companies have agreed to keep the financial details of the investment confidential.
In related news, Symrise Cosmetic Ingredients is introducing a Beauty Activations brand accelerator project to work with beauty brands in North America. The program will help companies implement product innovations through ingredient sourcing, developing market-ready solutions and trend analysis to support customer product launches.
In addition, Symrise Cosmetic Ingredients has partnered with Germany-based Evoxx Technologies to develop and manufacture enzymes because of consumer demand for ethical and transparent beauty. The move will strengthen the company’s expertise in biocatalysis for formulating cosmetic ingredients.
