Symrise launches bio-based caprylyl glycol, sustainably derived from “palm kernel oil”
19 Apr 2022 --- As the personal care and beauty industry continues to spotlight environmentally sustainable solutions due to rising demand, Symrise has unveiled Hydrolite 8 green, a “100% bio-based” caprylyl glycol for natural and green cosmetics formulation.
“The raw material of nature-derived caprylyl glycol is derived from palm kernel oil sourced from Indonesia,” Balint Koroskenyi, global product manager Microprotection, tells PersonalCareInsights.
Though it is naturally sourced, the product is said to offer the same properties and benefits as Symrises’ synthetic Hydrolite CG with a higher degree of sustainability.
“The industry has seen an increasing focus on sustainability and a growing demand for green ingredients,” adds Koroskenyi.
“With bio-based multifunctional ingredients, such as caprylyl glycol, becoming available, formulators gain access to a wider range of options for green formulations, and consumers gain products that reflect their desire for a more sustainable future.”
Moisturizing and product protection
The “high purity neat ingredient” functions as a hydrating moisturizer, improving the sensory profile for better pigment dispersion for an even look.
Additionally, the US Department of Agriculture bio-based-certified ingredient is also a wetting agent that Symrise suggests can be used for improving the dispersion and spreading of solids in the formula.
Hydrolite 8 green also regulates the viscosity and acts as a product protector, synergetic with various preservatives.
Green standards
“The development of this high purity neat ingredient with 100% bio-based carbon content gives testament to our high quality and sustainability standards. It also opens the door to new applications of the high-performance multifunctional ingredient, caprylyl glycol,” suggests Koroskenyi.
“In addition to its uncompromised efficacy as a product protection enhancer and its multitude of other formulation and consumer benefits, it can now deliver value in green formulations or make traditional formulations greener.”
Symrise shares that Hydrolite 8 green is COSMOS and NaTrue approved for its ingredient that works well in traditional and natural or green cosmetic formulations.
Multifunctional formulation solutions
“We feel proud to introduce this new member of our range of high-quality alkanediols and multifunctionals. This represents the next versatile green ingredient our customers can use in their formulations,” says Koroskenyi.
Symrise explains that the rising consumer demand for renewable materials and products has led to a myriad of green innovations, including multifunctionals.
“Caprylyl glycol has become a widely used popular choice in various formulation types, known for reliably delivering strong performance and multiple benefits,” shares the company.
Additionally, personal care manufacturers are increasingly using multifunctional ingredients in cosmetics formulations. This is because one ingredient can provide multiple benefits.
So, Hydrolite 8 green provides the benefits of reducing formulation complexity.
“They [multifunctional ingredients] are solving both formulator’s challenges of increasing product versatility with fewer ingredients and growing consumer demand for simplicity and lower impact on the environment,” says Symrise.
“Hydrolite 8 green forms the latest example of our continued effort to address our customers’ expectations while meeting our high-quality standards”, adds Imke Meyer, VP of global innovation cosmetic ingredients at Symrise.
