Weekly Roundup: BASF, e.l.f. Cosmetics and Amorepacific unveil cosmetic and care applications
09 Dec 2022 --- This week in personal care news, Amorepacific partnered with K-pop band BTS to launch the LANEIGE branded limited edition lip sleeping masks. E.l.f. Cosmetics collaborated with The Weather Channel and Grammy award-winning artist Meghan Trainor to launch a makeup kit that equips users against stormy weather. Moreover, BASF launched a COSMOS-compliant, wax-based pearlizer for rinse-off hair care applications.
Cooperation between Symrise, Norwest Ingredients and farmers resulted in access to mint, verified at the Gold level of SAI Platform’s Farm Sustainability Assessment. Verified mint accounts for one-third of supplied volume from Norwest Ingredients and Symrise intends to expand this by systematically advancing its sustainability approach along the entire supply chain. Norwest Ingredients and the network of farmers successfully passed a comprehensive review process to obtain the mint verification. The farmers grow mint using proven sustainable practices in water, energy management, soil health, biodiversity and working conditions.
Coty became one of the first 27 Pioneer companies to join Cosmetics Europe’s “Commit for Our Planet” initiative, a project which aims to reduce the cosmetic sector’s environmental footprint in Europe. The initiative can be joined by all cosmetics and personal care companies to enter the industry effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve packaging solutions and act for nature. The initiative includes specific commitments within the three themes of climate, packaging and nature, which will help drive progress across the entire value chain.
Stakeholders at the International Dialogue for the Evaluation of Allergens (IDEA) Annual Review meeting at Brussels discussed the importance of relying on a high-risk assessment standard. Scientific risk assessment methodologies are continuously being improved to promote the safe use of fragrances. IDEA aims to enhance consumer protection by bringing together stakeholders, including the fragrance industry, the dermatological community and policymakers, to build a framework to assess fragrance allergens, reports the International Fragrance Association. It also connects the European Commission, European Parliament and member state authorities.
Following the Offering Circular published last month, Royal DSM was required to announce transactions relating to the ordinary shares in its capital by the Dutch public offer rules. This included the delivery of treasury shares to employees in view of settling the vesting of share units or the exercise of stock options. The total number of issued and outstanding DSM ordinary shares is 173,072,337. Due to the delivery included, the number of outstanding DSM ordinary shares increased by 0.0097%.
Launches and releases
Amorepacific once again collaborated with the K-pop band BTS to launch a limited-edition three-piece – BTS | Amorepacific Lip Sleeping Mask Lip & Pop Edition Set. The debut came on the heels of a successful limited-edition release last year. This time, it also featured LANEIGE Lip Sleeping Mask, but with new flavors, including a never-seen-before “Butter” flavor and the return of the fan-favorite Peach Iced Tea. The launch was inspired by BTS’ record-breaking hits, including Butter, Permission to Dance and Dynamite.
Dubbed the number one Gen Z favorite makeup brand, e.l.f. Cosmetics kicked off the holidays with a digital campaign with The Weather Channel and Grammy award-winning artist Meghan Trainor to launch its Cosmetics Glow Bundle. The kit contains Halo Glow Liquid Filter, Luminous Putty Blush, Bite-Size Eyeshadow Palette, Liquid Glitter Eyeshadow and a Glossy Lip Stain. The Bundle is inspired by the stormy holiday season approaching, identifying weather as the “original influencer.”
BASF launched Euperlan NL Pearl, touted as the first COSMOS-compliant, wax-based pearlizer made for rinse-off applications. It highlighted that natural-based care products could meet a growing demand for environmental consciousness in consumers’ everyday life. The Euperlan NL Pearl is composed of the naturally derived ingredients hydrogenated vegetable oil, cocamidopropyl betaine and glycerol oleate. It is marketed as an alternative to non-COSMOS-approved ingredients and allows to address consumers’ demand for opacifying and pearlizing effects without using pigments. It can be applied for hair care applications, especially on wet and dry combing tests, anti-hair breakage measurements and suppleness tests.
Pronatec released organic cocoa butter, dubbed the first made in Switzerland. Since this summer, the company has been producing Swiss Cocoa from fairly traded organic cocoa beans at its newly opened PRONATEC Swiss Cocoa Production site near Schaffhausen. Aimed mainly at manufacturers of sustainable cosmetics and beauty products, pure cocoa butter is suggested to be used to make natural cosmetics. The cocoa beans are reported traceable to the smallholders who produce them. Moreover, no child labor is used at any stage of the supply chain.
OSHEN launched a makeup storage case made with recycled ocean-bound plastic. The company sources materials from Oceanworks. The OSHEN Makeup Case is made of 32% recycled ocean-bound plastic. It is described as combining style, function and sustainability. The case can hold up to 200 pieces of makeup and tools, features a stand-up brush section and is compact enough to fit under a countertop.
Awards and recognitions
The winners of the 2022 Byrdie Beauty Awards, honoring the best in beauty across the skin, makeup, body and hair care and beauty Pros categories. The list contains 109 beauty categories, designed to help readers narrow down the absolute best in beauty. Some types include best cleansing balm (Eadem Dew Dream Cleansing Balm); best overnight mask (U Beauty The Barrier Bioactive Treatment); best multi-use makeup product (Danessa Myricks Beauty Colorfix Eye, Cheek & Lip Cream Pigment); best hair oil (Squigs Gooseberry Delight Hair Oil) and best eyeliner under $25 (Half Magic Magic Flik Liquid Eyeliner).
L’Oréal took home the Grand Trophée d’Or, the top award for the best individual shareholder relations in the CAC 40, an event hosted by Le Revenu magazine. The award is given to companies with high-quality relationships with individual investors. In the survey, L’Oréal had the highest rating (triple hearts). The company acts on a strategy of support, information and building loyalty.
Chowis’ skin, hair and scalp diagnosis system MySkin F.A.I.N was awarded the CES Innovation Award ahead of the CES event, the world’s largest IT and home appliances exhibition in Las Vegas held annually in January. MySkin F.A.I.N won in the digital health category due to the artificial intelligence and algorithm-based skin diagnosis solution. The device is small and portable and can be used via a clip-on mechanism on a mobile phone or tablet which utilizes optimized lighting to analyze a total of 12 skin analysis parameters, providing more accurate optical analysis results.
LVMH attempted to normalize the presence of disabilities in the workplace by promoting the employment and integration of such people at the Group’s Disability Inclusion Office. The office was set up by the Human Resources department at the instigation of Chantal Gaemperle, Group EVP Human Resources & Synergies, in 2008. The office has helped LVMH to achieve the number of people with disabilities in its global workforce to 1.2% in 2021. The Group aims to double the rate from 1% to 2% by 2025.
Sephora North America announced the participants for its 2023 Accelerate brand incubator program, consisting of seven BIPOC brand founders spanning fragrance, makeup and skincare. Sephora’s Accelerate program will continue to focus on BIPOC-founded and owned brands as part of its commitment to increasing BIPOC representation in its product assortment. The program features a 360-degree, six-month curriculum with mentorship, merchandising support, grants, and investor connections to all participants, with the opportunity to launch at Sephora North America upon completion. The Sephora Accelerate program is now in its eighth year.
Argeville extended a four-day week to all its international centers. The move intended to unify the treatment among the 315 employees of the company, harmonizing the working hours between employees. Argeville aims to establish a more collaborative and cross-functional way of working, thus encouraging the internal mobility of talent.
