Weekly Roundup: Beiersdorf invests in digital dermatology, Kylie Jenner is first woman to 300M Instagram followers

14 Jan 2022 --- This week in personal care news, Beiersdorf acquired a stake in a start-up that will offer digital dermatology screenings via an app. Reality star and owner of Kylie Cosmetics, Kylie Jenner became the first woman to surpass 300 million followers on Instagram. Meanwhile, model Iskra Lawrence launched Saltaire , an “inclusive” personal and body care brand.

Investments and acquisitions
Beiersdorf is investing in “dermanostic,” a start-up offering digital dermatology consultations. Users of the app may book the service around the clock for €25 (US$28.67). After submitting their medical history and photos of their skin, a licensed dermatologist will review the information and respond within less than 24 hours, irrespective of location.

Beiersdorf says that apps and digital solutions offer unique opportunities for service delivery under the current COVID-19 pandemic. 

Technological solutions are taking over the personal care world. In related news, L’Oreal just launched its Coloright tool allowing users to try on customizable hair colors, after which dyes, bases, andLawrence says the line is based on “exotic botanicals” and “advanced” ingredients.developers tailored to the user can be made.

In other money moves, Biosynthetic Technologies, a manufacturer of biosynthetic oils for cosmetics, machines and medical use, has acquired Innoleo. The acquisee is a privately-held distributor of castor derivatives for personal care and industrial applications. Innoleo’s acquisition means Biosynthetic Technologies’ products will now be available globally.

Product launches and people
Model and Body Positivity movement ambassador Iskra Lawrence has launched Saltair “skincare inspired body care” brand. The launch was in conjunction with “brand incubator,” The Center. Lawrence says the line is meant to include people of all shades and backgrounds and attend to their skincare needs.

Saltair’s inaugural line-up consists of Saltair Serum Body Cleansers, available for US$11.99 in seven scents, and Saltair Moisturizing Body Lotions, available in seven scents for US$13.99; both products come in 100% recyclable aluminum bottles. Sustainable packaging is on the rise, with brands like Rituals and Beiersdorf making commitments to ethicize their packaging. 

Kylie Jenner recently surpassed 300 million followers on Instagram. The influencer and business owner is the first woman to reach this milestone, and her presence continues to grow on the platform. Currently, the most followed person on Instagram is Cristiano Ronaldo, with over 388 million followers.
