The Westfalia Fruit Group, an avocado supplier, unveiled its environmental and social projects at its fruit processing facility in Kwa Zulu Natal, South Africa, boosting sustainability and assisting local people. The facility refines avocado oil used in cosmetics and cooking, and has been coming up with innovative ways to decrease the three different forms of waste produced during the refining process: soap stock, used bleach earth, and avocado wax. Soap stock is recycled into soaps. Meanwhile, avocado wax is removed from the oil during a cooling process that makes the wax harden. The wax is then used to manufacture biofuels for boilers and burners to generate energy. The spent bleach earth, a combination of natural dolomite clay, is converted into a biofuel.

Beiersdorf revealed organic sales increased by over 15% in the first quarter of 2022 while the company celebrates its anniversary as a producer of plaster brands under the Hansaplast brand. The group now sells more than 200 products in 65 countries in its healthcare business – from wound sprays to ointments, bandages and tapes and plasters for various applications. In recent years, Beiersdorf has developed a plaster to reduce scars and plasters with the Bacteria Shield Insignia. These plasters “prevent 99% of bacteria” from coming into contact with the wound, meaning that the wound has maximum protection from infection. This creates optimal conditions for wound healing and speeds up the healing process compared to an untreated wound.
Research and studies
King’s College London and Newcastle University research investigated the impact of skin disorders eczema and ichthyosis on children. Additionally, the Medical Research Foundation is pledged £1 million (US$ 1,2 million) of new funding to help advance scientific understanding of these conditions, which could ultimately lead to improved support and treatment for children and young people with skin disorders. For children and young people, skin disorders can devastate physical and mental well-being, yet effective treatments are few and far between, the researchers noted. Skin disorders can harm all aspects of life, from schooling and relationships to career and lifestyle choices.
