BASF releases Verdessence RiceTouch biopolymer for mattifying skin products
04 Jul 2022 --- BASF’s Care Creations is introducing its biopolymer Verdessence RiceTouch to the global market, a solution for reducing skin greasiness while remaining natural and organic. The plant-based sensory powder has tiny particles that give the skin a smooth look for matte-style cosmetics.
It is suitable for face, body and hair care and can be combined with color cosmetics and sun protection, suggests the company.
Verdessence RiceTouch is made from non-GMO rice grown in the EU and delivers oil absorption properties. The biopolymer's compatibility with various formulas produces a mattifying and shine-controlling effect. Additional advantages include improved spreadability and stickiness reduction, says the company.
Biopolymers are organic materials made by the cells of living things. Due to their mechanical properties, they can be applied to regenerative medicine, tissue engineering, drug delivery and other medicinal applications. They offer qualities including non-toxicity, bio-activity catalysis and wound healing.
Many biopolymers are typically better at integrating into the body than synthetic polymers because they also have more complex structures similar to those of the human body. Synthetic polymers, on the other hand, can have a number of drawbacks like immunogenic rejection and toxicity after degradation.
The carbon dioxide (CO2) generated when biopolymers degrade can be reabsorbed by crops grown to replace them, making them nearly carbon neutral. As a result, they have the potential to reduce carbon emissions and the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere.
An alternative to artificial modifiers
The company claims that Verdessence RiceTouch biopolymer is made entirely of natural, renewable feedstocks and is easily biodegradable and devoid of preservatives. The production procedure requires no chemical alterations, which gives RiceTouch significant sustainability advantages, according to BASF.
“When it comes to choosing cosmetic goods, sensory is a crucial factor for consumers. Verdessence RiceTouch is one of the bio-sourced natural substitutes for synthetic sensory modifiers,” says Dr. Natalia Chudinova, marketing manager for Market Development Face and Skin Care, BASF.
Verdessence RiceTouch can be combined with other biopolymers like Verdessence Tara, Verdessence Alginate, and Verdessence Xanthan or used alone, making it possible to create a variety of leave-on products like creams and lotions, AP deos, foundations, eye shadows, dry shampoo and anhydrous products.
BASF in the spotlight
BASF’s Care Creations recently released two biotic ingredients for healthy skin aging: Probiolift and Postbiolift. The ingredients are based on Lactobacillus crispatus (L. crispatus) – an anaerobic bacterium that decreases with age and is found in the skin.
The Probiolift cosmetic ingredient contains live probiotics that may improve the appearance of wrinkles and give the skin a fuller appearance. Meanwhile, Postbiolift is a postbiotic that may smooth the appearance of crow’s feet and make the skin appear more elastic.
