Cosmetic Business 2024 live: Lignovations talks plant power and multifunctionality of LignoGuard
05 Jun 2024 | Lignovations
Barbara Jarych, marketing manager for Lignovations, talks to Personal Care Insights about the growing demand for upcycled ingredients and why its cosmetic ingredient, LignoGuard, answers the call for multifunctionality with a strong focus on sustainability and skin protection. We also learn more about Lignin, “the polymer behind plants’ protection and strength.”
It's all very pleased to be joined by Barbara Yardi with Legnovations.
Good to see you here, Barbara, at Cosmetics Business in Munich.
Hi, good to see you too.
Thank you.
Tell us about Legno guard.
It looks very exciting.
Thank you.
Yes, it is exciting.
Ligno guard is a multifunctional ingredient created from upcyclo lignin.
It's basically from double upcycled lignin.
And it works as an SPF booster.
It works as an antioxidant protector.
It works as an emulsifier, and the best of it is that it is from lignin, which is like one of the most abundant polymers in the earth that has never been truly used because it is a very complex polymer and nobody.
Really knew how to use it, but and then lignivations came in.
Yes, yes, this is how this is how it works.
Lignin is found in plants and basically it's a byproduct from the cellulose production, so usually it has been burned, but lignovovation is a startup that is a spin-off from the Technology university from Vienna.
And we created a patented technology that enables us to create the colloidal lignin particles, which are very small particles of lignin that enables it to take all the amazing properties of lignin into the cosmetic products, and what lignin does in plants is the UV protection is the antioxidant protection.
It's giving the plants this sturdy structure.
So now thanks to Lignoguard, we are able to take all these amazing capabilities and move it into the cosmetic product.
That's excellent information.
Tell us a little bit more, Barbara, if you can, about what products can benefit from Lignoguard.
So I think like like our top product where we use Lignoguard so far is the sun protection because it's very strong.
SPF booster it's also natural and upcycled, so I think it's something that some industry is looking for, and it can boost SPF of the UV filters by up to 50% or 22 SPF points.
So I think it's a very strong booster.
It can work both in mineral and organic filters, but it also can be used as day cream.
It's also a strong antioxidants, stronger than vitamin C and E.
It also helps to stabilize the emulsion, and as you can see here, lignin has a little bit of this natural brown color that's going to give the cream a little bit of a natural glow, so a little bit of brown color beige, so it can be perfectly used.
It speeds up the tan process.
Somehow skin looks a little bit better, a little bit.
The color is enhanced, and depending on the formulation you can make the color transparent or you can make the color a little bit, making you a little bit browner or like I said, enhance the skin color.
Like you said, it's multifunctional, right?
Yes, it's very multifunctional.
So basically I think another good use would be color cosmetics or as you said, the bronzers.
Also we're thinking about hair care.
I think it's very functional.
Excellent.
A lot of great information there, Barbara Yadi with Lake Innovations.
Thank you so much for your time today.
Thank you so much for coming.
