In-cosmetics Global 2025: Evonik launches animal-testing-free biosurfactant

02 May 2025 | Evonik

Evonik showcased ten new products at In-cosmetics Global 2025 in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. The specialty chemicals company spoke about launching its new biosurfactant, which is animal-testing-free, on the trade show floor. We discussed how animal testing is shifting in the industry and what Evonik is doing to avoid it.

This is Sabina Waldeck for Personal care insights at InC Cosmetics, joined by Wolfgang Goertz, vice president of cosmetic solutions at Avonic.

Welcome.

So what are you showcasing at In Cosmetics?

We are showcasing 10 new products and 2 concepts for our customers.

Out of the 10 products, it's 7 active ingredients, including a new peptide and also extending our range of collagens.

And on the functional ingredients, it is a new emollient, a new multi-functional ingredient with preservative boosting, and many more things like the concepts that I mentioned.

And how are you reducing the climate footprint of personal care products with your new emollient?

Yes, emollients play an important role in the CO2 footprint of skincare formulas because they represent the largest volume share of those products, and if you can reduce their footprint, you're really doing a good thing for your entire formula.

Using enzymes to make those emollients.

The enzymes don't require high temperatures, so you save a lot of energy, and that saves finally on the CO2 footprint.

And together with raw materials that are sustainably sourced, we can go down to a net zero.

And how is your new biosurfectant addressing concerns about animal testing?

We are just launching a new product in Cosmetics, the Rans D50, which is a CFI compliant animal testing-free biosurfectant, and this is really addressing the needs and expectations of a lot of our customers, especially in South America, but also around the world.

And where do you think that animal testing will go in the future and when do you think that it will be phased out of the personal care industry as a whole?

Yes, this is a very good question and it's not an easy answer.

First of all, it's a complex topic.

It's being handled differently all over the world.

There are different legislations or regulation bodies that see it differently, so we believe that.

More alternatives to animal testing, more in vitro testing actually, but there will still be for some endpoints the use of animal testing required, and we hope all together that we will have more testing methods soon to finally phase out the animal testing to a great extent.

And do you have anything else to add today?

Yeah, our slogan is the soul and science of beauty, so Ivoic really is is combining science with passion, I would say, to the benefit of the cosmetic industry.

Perfect.

Thank you for joining Personal Care Insights.

You're welcome.
