Shiseido’s supply chain-conscious Ulé selects Bormioli Luigi for beauty packaging
08 Jun 2022 --- Shiseido’s eco-friendly beauty brand Ulé is advancing its environmentally sustainable portfolio with selected jars and bottles from glassmaker Bormioli Luigi’s green collection, ecoLine.
“Brands appreciate ecoLine for its ready-to-go collection aspect, the lightening of the weight and volume of the glass and the introduction of recycled glass,” a spokesperson at Bormioli Luigi tells PersonalCareInsights.
“Ulé chose glass rather than another material for its aesthetic and premium side and also for its recyclability and the fact that a portion of recycled glass can be added without compatibility problems. This is the case of the ecoLine range.”
Ulé is known for its vertical farms at its proprietary Ulé Eco-Farm in France, using the ingredients grown there for its cosmetic products. It previously partnered with Sulapac for eco-friendly lids that do not leave microplastics behind.
“Over 300 million tons of plastic are produced every year, and only a small percentage gets recycled. A lot of that plastic is necessary to make useful things that last. Still, all too often, they end up in the wrong place,” Dr. Suvi Haimi, CEO and co-founder at Sulapac, previously told, PersonalCareInsights.
Glass volume
The ecoLine represents a material saving of 50% compared with traditional jars. The material savings results in a lightweight feel – “a 100ml container can weigh as little as 80 grams”. It also contains post-consumer recycled glass.
The company claims that the manufacturing of ecoLine generates “significant carbon dioxide savings” during production and transport. It has also been certified as Cosmos by Ecocert, ensuring natural and organic materials.
The company says that the products in the collection offer the same levels of shock resistance and high-end quality as every single product in the glassmaker’s portfolio.
Transparent packaging
The glass packaging will be used for Ulé’s creams, mist and In&Out oils.
“We have chosen to work with industrial partners that share our values. Bormioli Luigi helped us respond to our need for packaging with a strong identity that is ethically produced and respects the environment,” adds Lindsay Azpitarte, founder at Ulé.
From the ecoLine, Ulé selected the lightweight range, the Verdi bottle for In&Out Avoir It All Oil. The ecoBottle bottle comes in a 100 ml format, and the ecoJar at 50 ml. The 15 ml Aphrodite jar was selected for the smaller range.
Since the brand targets a short supply chain to lower its carbon footprint, it chose a European manufacturer that uses recycled and recyclable materials.
