How AI connects holistic beauty’s dots

Consumers are increasingly knowledgeable of the link between their overall health and their appearance, recognizing that factors like location, nutrition, and lifestyle affect their skin. However, keeping track of multiple life aspects and their impact on skin health is challenging — that is where AI technologies can step in. 

AI is emerging as a tool to bridge this gap, offering consumers coherent insights into their ideal holistic beauty routines.

“Skin is connected to so many aspects of our everyday lives, from nutrition and sleep to stress, hormones, lifestyle, and our environment. What we are seeing now is that consumers are becoming much more aware of those connections too,” Irina Mazur, chief commercial and marketing officer at beauty tech company Revieve, tells Personal Care Insights.

Symrise echoes this observation, citing data that 54% of Asia-Pacific consumers recognize the connection between skin health and overall health.

“Consumers increasingly associate healthy skin with hydration, nutrition, sleep quality, and stress management, with drinking more water cited as the most common action (51%) taken to improve skin health,” a Symrise spokesperson tells us.

“This is driving interest in holistic beauty-from-within solutions that support physical health, emotional well-being, and healthy aging alongside visible skin benefits.”

Mazur explains that the beauty industry is moving into a space that focuses less on treating beauty as a collection of isolated concerns and more on connecting the dots between skin and other broader lifestyle factors.

“As technology becomes more sophisticated, we have an opportunity to make those connections easier for people to understand and turn them into guidance that is relevant to the individual.”

AI clearing up confusion

Growing awareness of the gut-skin connection is driving demand for nutritional solutions that complement topical skin care.

Mazur says there is a “huge” opportunity for beauty companies in bringing together areas of consumers’ lives that impact the skin, that have traditionally been fragmented. She believes AI can play an important role in the space because it can help make sense of complexity at a scale that simply wasn’t possible before.

“It can bring together skin insights, product and ingredient information, individual preferences, behavioral signals, and contextual factors such as climate or environment, and translate them into guidance that feels much more relevant to that person,” she explains.

“The value is not in collecting more data, but in making the right information useful at the right moment.”

One key aspect of AI recommendation tools is that they make information explainable to the user. Personal Care Insights previously spoke with Anastasia Georgievskaya, CEO and co-founder of Haut.AI, who told us that recommendations must be transparent or they risk losing credibility.

“Consumers are initially excited about AI but quickly become skeptical about the recommendations if they do not understand them. The most common question from users is, ‘Can you explain why this product was recommended to me?,’” said Georgievskaya.

Using AI to help drive consumer understanding is what makes personalization successful, Mazur says.

“AI should make beauty less complicated, not more complicated. Consumers do not need another dashboard full of data points. They need help understanding what those signals mean for them, what may be changing, and what actions are relevant,” Mazur says.

“Information about ingredients, benefits, products, and routines can be understood alongside the individual and their context. The result is not simply more personalization, but better-informed personalization.”

Simplifying beauty-from-withinAI can bring together skin, lifestyle, nutrition, and environmental data to help consumers understand their beauty needs.

According to Symrise, demand is rising for holistic beauty solutions that work from within to promote confidence and healthy, preventive aging. This demand is creating new opportunities for scientifically-backed functional nutrition and probiotic solutions.

“Growing research into the gut-skin axis is reshaping how the industry approaches skin health and beauty. Scientists increasingly recognize that skin appearance is influenced not only by topical factors, but also by systemic processes involving the gut microbiome, immune function, metabolism, and nutrition,” the spokesperson says. 

They cite research suggesting that the gut microbiota can influence skin physiology through several interconnected pathways. Some of these pathways include the regulation of oxidative stress, modulation of inflammatory signaling, and the production of microbial metabolites, such as short-chain fatty acids.

“Rather than viewing the skin as an isolated organ, product developers are increasingly considering how nutrition and the [gut] microbiome may support biological processes associated with healthy-looking skin,” the spokesperson explains. 

According to Symrise, emerging research has connected gut microbiome-related mechanisms to skin outcomes like hydration and barrier integrity, sensitivity, and signs of aging. This link has created opportunities for evidence-based, nutritional solutions that complement traditional topical skin care routines. 

Revieve’s Mazur adds that consumers are not aspiring for skin perfection, but feeling well, aging well, and living well. “That naturally raises expectations for beauty,” she says.

However, moderating factors that influence the gut microbiome and making strategic choices to promote certain gut microbiome outcomes can be tricky. As consumers learn more about this complex relationship, their expectations for the brands that claim to address it are also rising. 

Mazur says people have access to more information than ever before, “and that has made them far more knowledgeable and intentional about the choices they make.”

“They are looking beyond the immediate result and asking bigger questions: Is this right for me? Is there science behind it? Does it fit my lifestyle? And will it deliver value for me over time?”

She says consumers have a real desire for simplicity, as the beauty market has become incredibly crowded.

“Consumers are overwhelmed by products, ingredients, and competing claims. So while they want more sophisticated and personalized solutions, they also want someone to make that complexity easier to navigate.”

Mazur concludes that the bar is rising for credible guidance, transparency, and solutions that feel relevant to people’s lives, rather than simply giving them more choices.
