Peru cosmetics, essential oil and surfactant exports rise

Peru’s exports of essential oils, cosmetics, and surfactants reached US$89 million between January and July 2026, up 6.8% year-over-year, according to the country’s Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur).
The chemical products category is now worth US$1.226 billion, up 9.9%, and a national export total of US$63.521 billion, up 33%. Mincetur says the result marks Peru’s 27th consecutive month of export growth.
Peru’s natural colorants — used in cosmetics — which are filed under agriculture rather than chemicals, earned US$232 million over the same seven months.
Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism, Rogers Valencia, says the performance shows the strengthening of Peru’s export offerings in international markets.
The categories feeding the beauty industry — essential oils, natural colorants, and botanical extracts — point to Peru ingredient suppliers potentially strengthening their global position.
What the figure covers
Mincetur’s total growth for essential oils, cosmetics, and surfactants is filed as one customs group, so the total does not separate finished beauty products from industrial surfactants or fragrance feedstock. At US$89 million across seven months, the line accounts for 0.14% of Peru’s export value, and its growth trails both the chemical sector it sits in and the 33% national average.

Elsewhere in that grouping, organic and inorganic products reached US$363 million, up 14.1%, and medicines US$53 million, up 5.1%.
China and the US remained Peru’s leading export destinations overall, taking US$24.340 billion and US$5.971 billion, respectively. Meanwhile, the EU took US$5.618 billion, up 6.5%.
Peru counted 8,305 exporters over the period earlier this year, up 3%. Sixty-six percent of those were small and medium-sized enterprises.
Colorants outsize cosmetics
Mincetur places natural colorants under agriculture exports rather than chemicals. Exports in natural colorants were up 2.5% and approximately 2.6 times the value of the entire essential oils, cosmetics, and surfactants line at US$232 million.
Most of that trade is cochineal carmine. Carmine is a red pigment extracted from the cochineal insect and used in cosmetics such as lipstick, lip gloss, blush, eyeshadow, and nail polish.
Peru supplies between 70% and 80% of global cochineal carmine and exported US$339.35 million of it in 2025, according to Peru’s Ministry of Agricultural Development. Denmark, Brazil, and the US were named as the main destinations, and Chinese demand was found to be growing over 50% a year.
Pressure on both lines
Peru’s two beauty-facing export categories may face structural headwinds.
The European Commission has asked the Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety to assess cuminaldehyde and p-cymene, molecules that occur naturally in cumin, thyme, and oregano oils. These ingredients cannot be removed without removing the oil. Opinions are expected around April 2027.
On the colorant side, carmine-free formulation continues to gain ground.

US-based Sun Chemical has extended a vegan pigment line in response to customer demand for carmine alternatives, and biotechnology company Debut has produced carminic acid in the lab.
Selling the Amazon to formulators
The Trade, Tourism and Investment Commission of Peru took 13 companies from Lima, San Martín, Cusco, and Loreto to In-cosmetics Global in Paris, France, in April 2026. The national pavilion generated approximately US$1.29 million in business, a figure combining sales made at the show with opportunities projected over 12 months.
Exhibits included vegetable oils: sacha inchi, copaiba, aguaje, and ungurahui. Essential oils covered palo santo, palo rosa, and muña. Butters came from murumuru, copoazú, and cacao. Botanical extracts included camu camu, vanilla, and maca.
Peru’s export update lands in a market where buyers increasingly distinguish natural sourcing from ethical sourcing and where traceable botanical supply chains carry commercial weight.
