Antarctica actives: Arctiva steroid-free cream for psoriasis shows high success rate
14 Jun 2023 --- Arctiva has developed a steroid-free psoriasis cream that was evaluated by a third-party consumer panel which showed that 92% of users experienced calmer, more moisturized skin and significantly reduced psoriasis symptoms after using the cream.
Eight out of ten participants from the independent study reported less flaky, redness, sloughing and itching within two weeks. Arctiva features Hydrosurf glycolipid technology with fermented ingredients from Antarctica.
“Hydrosurf is found exclusively in Arctiva skincare products. Glycolipids are bio-based ingredients naturally produced through fermentation that have lower toxicity and less risk for any irritation compared to commonly used chemical alternatives,” Vic Peroni, chief operating officer at Arctiva Wellness tells Personal Care Insights.
“Unlike other products that sit on the surface and mask skin conditions, Hydrosurf increases absorption and water mobility, which improves the circulation of water and water-based ingredients throughout the skin, delivering relief to the source of pain and irritation and leaving users with hydrated and healthy skin.”
Channeling fermented ingredients
Arctiva is a medicated formulation featuring 2% salicylic acid, an active ingredient approved by the US FDA. The formula also features key vitamins, essential oils and botanicals. Colloidal oatmeal is used in the eczema cream and salicylic acid in the psoriasis cream.
“We understand the importance of addressing the skin's overall health. That’s why our products also include a beneficial blend of vitamin A, vitamin B3 (niacinamide) and vitamin C, essential oils (vitamin E, jojoba oil) and botanicals (honeysuckle flower extracts) that help to soothe and hydrate the skin,” he explains.
The formulation is boosted by lonicera japonica (Japanese honeysuckle) extract and caprifolium flower (Italian honeysuckle) extracts.
The formulation includes vitamin A, vitamin B3 (niacinamide), vitamin C, vitamin E, jojoba oil, lonicera japonica (Japanese honeysuckle) extract and caprifolium flower (Italian honeysuckle) extracts.
The company says that Japanese honeysuckle flowers are good natural sources of flavonoids and saponins, which have antioxidant benefits. While the Italian honeysuckles provide soothing properties for the skin.
After one day of application, 89% of users saw smoother skin, 81% experienced less flaking, and 89% itched less.
“Our proprietary psoriasis cream has been formulated with essential ingredients to provide deep relief and hydration to psoriasis sufferers. The study’s compelling results demonstrate that we have succeeded in developing an effective, steroid-free psoriasis solution to alleviate pain and irritation,” says Vic Peroni, chief operating officer at Arctiva Wellness.
Skin health solutions in spotlight
In other industry developments, thermal waters show different beneficial effects on the skin due to their physicochemical composition. The health functionalities of thermal water in the treatment of some skin diseases enable formulators to use it as an active ingredient in cosmetic formulations.
In addition, a Poland-based study has found that the herbal flower Serratula coronata is a source of phytoecdysteroids compounds, which can be used to develop formulations for skin care with anti-inflammatory benefits. Researchers suggest cosmetics with phytoecdysteroids are suitable for people with dry and very dry skin, psoriasis and seborrheic dermatitis.
Meanwhile, an independent consumer study has affirmed the efficacy of Arctiva’s eczema cream which reduced symptoms in participants by 91%. The clean label steroid-free skin care brand launched its eczema and psoriasis treatments last month.
