BASF debuts biodegradable dirt-lifting polymer for cleaner laundry and environment
29 Nov 2023 --- BASF sees environmental sustainability with its Bverde GP 790 L launch. Its anti-redeposition polymer is the latest addition to the chemical innovator’s laundry detergent ingredient portfolio, which it believes will bond performance to sustainability.
According to the American Cleaning Institute, anti-redeposition agents are used in laundry detergents to “help prevent soil from resettling on fabrics” after they are removed during washing. Acrylate polymers are more commonly used in detergent formulation to improve stain removal performance from oil and dirt.
“The launch of the Bverde readily biodegradable polymer demonstrates our unwavering commitment to bringing innovative, sustainable ingredients to the market,” says Amita Gupta, VP of Business Management for Home Care and Industrial Solutions North America at BASF.
Biobased chemistry
Engineered as a modified polysaccharide, this polymer delivers the performance “matching” acrylate polymer chemistry, boasting a 79% biobased content.
It is readily biodegradable meaning it will degrade more than 60% within 28 days, as measured by the OECD 301F method. This method screens chemicals for biodegradability in aerobic environments, explains Eurofins.
“BASF’s team of experts works tirelessly to ensure that we stay ahead of the curve when it comes to cutting-edge technology and new ingredients, restating our commitment to our customers and the environment,” comments Gupta.
In the realm of environmental sustainability, BASF asserts that compatibility is critical. Compared to acrylic-based chemistry, Bverde GP 790 L showcases “superior” compatibility with standard detergent formulations. The result is a “clear and homogeneous” product.
Recently, BASF debuted its eco-friendly Lavergy M Ace 100 L made with mannanase. These enzymes are “essential components” of modern detergent formulations that aid in environmentally sustainable laundry performance.
Eco-conscious cleaning
Innovations toward more environmental sustainability have been noted in the industry. In a world-first partnership on near-zero emissions laundry ingredients, Unilever’s India business is piloting synthetic soda ash production, hoping to helpunlock faster emissions reductions along its supply chain.
Also, Clariant unveiled TexCare Gemini SG Terra, offering detergent formulators a “one product, double function” soil-release polymer that keeps the rheology of the detergent under control.
Recently, Sasol Chemicals launched its brand Livinex, which offers biosurfactants used in the home care, technical, institutional and industrial cleaning markets. In a Special Report, Evonik and Henkel spoke to us about the evolution of home cleaning for modern households.
