Sasol Chemicals reveals biosurfactants under two new brands for personal care and cleaning products
26 Oct 2023 --- Sasol Chemicals has launched two brands, Carinex and Livinex, to expand Sasol’s offerings of environmentally sustainable products.
The first product offerings are biosurfactants under Carinex sophorolipids (SL) and Livinex SL. Carinex will target the personal care market, while Livinex will be offered to customers in the home care, technical, institutional and industrial cleaning markets.
“As Sasol continues to find ways to offer our customers lower-carbon footprint products, we believe partnerships are the key to unlocking and accelerating sustainable innovation and transformation,” says Eric Stouder, SVP at Sasol Chemicals.
“Combining Holiferm’s advanced technology with Sasol’s unique chemistry and global reach, we can now offer our customers mass-produced, high performing and more sustainable solutions at competitive prices.”
Biosurfactant for hair care
Sasol Chemicals is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of surfactants. It previously announced plans to begin exploring alternatives to traditional surfactants.
In March 2022, the company began a strategic partnership with Holiferm Limited to develop sophorolipids, a fermentation-derived biosurfactant offering an extensive reduction in carbon footprint compared with petroleum or bio-based surfactants.
Using Holiferm’s proprietary technology, Sasol’s sophorolipids are entirely derived from natural palm-free oils and sugars, making them environmentally friendly products without compromising performance.
While fully biodegradable, Carinex and Livinex SL are well-tolerated by aquatic organisms, acting as detergents, dispersants, emulsifiers, foaming agents or wetting agents. The ingredient is commonly needed for daily personal care products, such as shampoos, conditioners, detergents and degreasers.
“Our partnership with Sasol Chemicals allows us to increase the reach and use of biosurfactants to markets across the globe. We are seeing an increase in interest and uptake of sustainable solutions and are well-placed with our partners to meet this demand,” says Richard Lock, managing director at Holiferm.
SEPAWA Congress
Sasol Chemicals and Holiferm are attending the SEPAWA (Soap, Perfume, Cosmetic and Detergent Professionals) Congress 2023 conference, which began today and will continue until the 27th in Berlin, Germany. The companies are showcasing the biosurfactant manufacturing technology and the impact it will have on the future of personal care and cleaning products.
Recently, LanzaTech Global collaborated with Dow to introduce a new biodegradable surfactant to the home care market made from carbon emissions. Surfactants are added to detergents to create foam and allow dirt to be washed away. The official launch of EcoSense 2470 will occur during a presentation at the Innovation Forum with Dow experts hosted during the SEPAWA Congress.
Berg+Schmidt launched a plant-based emulsifier, branded BergaMuls ET2, which offers rheological properties that generate a positive skin feel. BergaMuls ET2 will be presented for the first time at SEPAWA. Company members will explain and demonstrate processing options for various personal care applications. They will illustrate how the ingredients can be customized to meet individual needs, providing innovative, environmentally friendly, safe and functional solutions.
