Beauty tech innovations: AI unlocks new skin analysis dimensions, precision skin care and LED therapy merge
17 Oct 2023 --- The realm of skin care is not what it was ten years ago. Novel advancements have brought to light new capabilities in what brands and formulators can do for their customers in terms of analyzing skin conditions using advanced AI systems and elevating end user’s at-home skin care routines, catalyzing the next wave of smart beauty experiences.
Personal Care Insights explores new concepts piloted by AI skin diagnosis platform EveLab Insight and skin care tech brand Amiro.
“Over the past year, we’ve been exploring novel ways to develop new skin dimensions in our AI platform to transform the marketing language of brands into quantifiable ways of assessing skin health,” Eagle Lee, general manager of EveLab Insight, tells us.
“Through advanced algorithm training and deep learning, our professional skin analysis system discerns and assesses crucial factors contributing to radiant skin: oiliness condition, skin texture and evenness of skin tone.”
Unraveling radiant skin with imaging tech
EveLab Insight harnesses imaging technology and parallel polarized light to identify surface and deep skin issues precisely. It has developed the capacity to assess more than 35 skin dimensions using its platform, which leverages years of skin care research.
“The more interesting pursuit is not to perpetually increase that number [of skin dimensions]. Rather, recent efforts have been to uncover new ways to understand skin health by having AI cross-reference multiple skin dimensions and develop new compound or complex assessments. This led us to a more quantifiable way of assessing a long-time holy grail of skin care radiance,” reveals Lee.
“For years, brands have touted the ability of their products to bring brilliance or luminescence to consumers’ skin as a sign of health. However, how each brand defines this ‘radiance’ is largely subjective and varies widely. In collaboration with several heritage skin care brands, EveLab Insight delved into how AI can help quantify radiance.”
Although achieving radiant, glowing skin is a universal goal, it is one shaped by diverse cultural and regional perspectives. In the US, terms like “radiant,” “dewy,” “luminous” and “fresh” are commonplace, whereas in Asia, consumers lean towards “translucent,” “brightening” and “porcelain,” Lee points out.
Notably, those residing in humid tropical climates favor “bright” and “translucent” skin over the concept of “glow,” he adds. “These linguistic subtleties mirror distinct cultural inclinations and beauty perceptions.”
“By pinpointing the precise metrics that underpin radiant skin, we empower brands to recommend customized skin care solutions based on individual needs that underpin healthy skin but also flex to cultural expectations. Additionally, we’re training the algorithm to continually learn and understand how radiance is understood across consumer demographics and global regions.”
AI — a family doctor?
Large-scale models like GPT have enabled a more personalized skin analysis and product-matching experience, Lee tells us. These models can generate customized skin care routines based on user-provided text, images or even voice inputs.
“Employing multimodal capabilities to understand voice, text and image inputs, they can delve into the user’s skin type, lifestyle habits and specific needs, akin to a personal family doctor. These models can recommend suitable skin care products or solutions based on the user’s comprehensive skin issues,” Lee says.
By working with AIGC — a provider of machine learning, data integration and business analytics services and solution — EveLab Insight simulates the efficacy of different products, allowing users to “intuitively visualize” the effects of skin care, as well as how skin changes over time under various conditions and with the use of different skin care products.
“These simulations can provide a visual representation of the impact over months and even years, highlighting the value of preventative beauty care,” Lee adds.
Through skin characterization and skin analysis across different age groups, EveLab Insight has also constructed a skin phenotype aging atlas and facial aging reflection model.
“The skin phenotype atlas reveals the aging manifestations of different skin types, while the facial aging reflection model uncovers characteristic changes and aging trends in the skin across different age groups,” says Lee.
“This not only assists consumers in identifying pivotal points for each dimension of aging and which facial areas and aging characteristics to pay attention to but also provides beauty institutions with guidance on what anti-aging advice and products to offer to consumers of different age groups. Moreover, it offers vital clues and scientific foundations for the development of anti-aging products.”
Integrating precision skin care in light therapy
In related developments, Amiro recently held a product launch event, unveiling two of its products of the year: the Amiro LumoMax LED light facial beauty device and the Amiro S2 Seal skin-tightening device.
The Amiro LumoMax is considered the brand’s most user-friendly LED light facial beauty device on the market. It delivers three times the energy output of comparable devices yet weighs only a third as much. This performance is made possible by a unique design featuring 21.5 degree star-cone-shaped reflector cups.
This design delivers an energy output of 177 mW/cm2, while maintaining a lightweight design of just 672 g. In comparison, the brand highlights that other devices typically weigh around 1400 g and only provide 70 mW/cm2 of energy.
Multifunctional beauty device
The LumoMax offers post-cosmetic surgery care and includes five daily modes — whitening, soothing, acne-removal, sleep and privacy. These modes can be easily activated with a single button.
The second product, the Amiro S2, is the upgraded version of Amiro’s original stamping beauty device. It offers precise anti-aging treatment through a four-color zoning mask, eliminating the need to switch devices or modes. The S2 boasts the highest energy output and the most light-beads among similar products, doubling the effectiveness.
According to data from SGS, a globally recognized testing, inspection and certification organization, 30 women who used the product for seven days saw a 17.98% reduction in cheek wrinkles, a 24.22% reduction in eye wrinkles, a 12.91% increase in cheek firmness and a 9.72% increase in skin elasticity.
The Amiro S2 also ensures safety with a 0.2 mm ultra-thin double NTC sensor, which conducts temperature checks 100 times per second, a three second pre-heating technology that intelligently calculates and precisely outputs energy and an axial motion sensor that monitors micrometer-level motion trajectories.
“There is no ‘master key’ for skin problems. Each issue requires a unique solution,” says Neo Wang, the founder and CEO at Amiro.
“Only by understanding the biological mechanisms, environmental factors and signaling pathways that cause skin problems can we provide direct, fast, effective and personalized skin care solutions. Precision skin care is the pursuit of enhancing the certainty of efficacy at the smallest unit of the skin.”
Collaborations for finer solutions
In order to meet more refined user needs, Amiro has collaborated with experts focusing on facial rejuvenation and sensitive skin repair. Together, they have jointly developed and launched the “master version” of Amiro S2.
Firstly, this version accurately identifies the biological mechanisms, environmental factors and signal pathways that cause skin problems, and through human efficacy experiments, it accurately evidences the efficacy of skin care.
By matching optoelectronic directional technology, it precisely delivers energy and active ingredients to the deep layers of the skin, improving deep-seated issues such as collagen loss, ligament fascia relaxation and melanosome secretion.
