Key takeaways
- Algolein’s precision fermentation process eliminates batch variability, supply chain volatility, and pesticide residues found in crop oils.
- Ergosterol’s natural presence in Algolein enables targeted skin barrier strengthening and oxidative stress reduction for formulators.
- Life cycle assessments confirm Algolein’s reduced environmental footprint across land use, climate impact, and ecotoxicity metrics.

Checkerspot has introduced Algolein, a line of precision-fermented lipids for the personal care and cosmetics industries. The company will debut the range with Algolein TG C18/80, a non-GMO high-oleic algal oil commercialized through a strategic partnership with ingredient specialist La Fabrique Vegetale.
According to Checkerspot, the ingredient is part of its strategic shift toward bio-based alternatives that bypass the volatility of traditional agricultural oils. By utilizing microalgae fermentation instead of field-grown crops, the solution solves persistent industry challenges regarding batch-to-batch variability, supply chain challenges, and security.
“The market is moving away from ingredients tied to intensive agriculture, and formulators are increasingly looking to microalgae and precision fermentation to get there,” says John Krzywicki, Checkerspot’s CEO. “Our platform gives the industry drop-in alternatives that outperform the oils they’re replacing and sets the stage for a new generation of innovation.”
Consistency through fermentation
The ingredient is composed of over 80% oleic acid and features the presence of ergosterol. Checkerspot notes that this naturally occurring sterol is typically absent in standard plant oils.
Ergostol’s biological makeup allows formulators to target specific skin care needs, such as skin barrier strengthening and reducing oxidative stress.
Additionally, Checkerspot spotlights that the new lipid offers a consistent chemical profile and is resistant to the seasonal fluctuations and environmental stressors affecting conventional vegetable oils. This is due to the controlled and reliable fermentation process.
The company underscores that its Algolein ingredient offers formulation advantages for R&D teams. It provides oxidative stability, which effectively mitigates the rancidity issues that often plague natural formulations.
Moreover, the ingredients’ neutral sensory profile ensures that it does not alter the color or scent of finished products.
Toward a greener lipid
Checkerpot highlights that the oil demonstrates a reduced environmental footprint compared to crop oils of similar composition. The company also states that life cycle assessments indicate improvements across areas like land use, climate change impact, and ecotoxicity.
By decoupling lipid production from intensive agriculture, Checkerspot says the new ingredient provides a more secure supply chain — one that is not subject to crop failures or the logistical disruptions common in the global vegetable oil market.
Since the oil is produced in a bioreactor rather than a field, the company stresses that the ingredient is free from pesticide residues and other agricultural contaminants. This ensures a high level of purity for premium skin care, hair care, and makeup lines.
