First clinical study finds 100% efficacy of Beauty Health’s Hydrafacial Clarifying Treatment
13 Jan 2023 --- The Beauty Health Company’s skincare treatment Hydrafacial is clinically reported to improve acne skin concerns, according to a new study published in the peer-reviewed Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology.
During the 12-week assessment, 20 study participants between the ages of 19 and 48 with varied skin tones received a clarifying Hydrafacial treatment from a trained esthetician every two weeks. All participants reported a significant improvement in acne severity, finding they had fewer acne lesions and cleaner, more radiant-looking skin.
The Hydrafacial Clarifying Treatment is a hydra-dermabrasion device that uses its proprietary vortex technology in combination with topical solutions to cleanse and exfoliate oily and congested skin.
“Anyone who has ever experienced acne understands the desire to find a solution that truly works and can help them feel more confident in their appearance,” says study co-author Dr. Jwala Karnik, chief medical officer at Beauty Health.
Additionally, participants reported a significant boost in confidence in their appearance after the study, growing from 40% feeling more confident after their first treatment to 100% after their final treatment.
Testing efficacy
The study reports that acne has a prevalence of over 90% among adolescents and persists into adulthood in approximately 12 to 14% of cases, often resulting in negative psychological and social impacts.
“This is the first clinical study to formally assess the safety and efficacy of the Hydrafacial Clarifying Treatment on the appearance of patients with acne when delivered as a series of six treatments over 12 weeks,” the researchers share.
Each patient received the treatment using the Hydrafacial Elite machine. The treatment consisted of a cleansing and peeling step using Hydrafacial’s Activ-4 and GlySal solutions, an exfoliation step using the Beta-HD solution, the use of blue LED lights for eight minutes and a hydration step with Anti-Ox+.
Efficacy was assessed by the patient and investigator using the Global Acne Severity Scale (GASS) and a customized questionnaire which included four skin assessments: clearer appearance, reduced erythema, reduced oil and congestion and skin health and radiance.
The researchers found that the treatment resulted in a “statistically significant” improvement in investigator and patient GASS from baseline to final treatment. The proportion of patients with investigator assessment of no acne to clear skin increased from 20% to 65% from baseline to final treatment.
Notably, researchers agreed that 100% of patients had both clearer skin and healthier and more radiant skin. “Given the relationship between acne and low self-esteem, it is meaningful that 100% of patients also agreed that they felt more confident in their appearance following the treatment,” the investigators share.
