Givaudan Active Beauty launches radish-based “trendy” purple cosmetic pigment
13 Sep 2022 --- New Purple 2364, extracted by green fractionation from Raphanus Sativus L., is the latest addition to Givaudan Active Beauty’s portfolio of pigments for makeup formulations. The pigment is an environmentally sustainable vegan alternative to synthetic pigments and was developed in the shade purple after consumer studies revealed that 88% of 110 women consider New Purple 2364 a “trendy shade.”
“New Purple 2364 is natural and sustainable as it is obtained from a selected purified fraction of red radish planted and harvested with good agronomic practices,” Pauline Martin, operational marketing and communication manager at Givaudan Active Beauty, tells PersonalCareInsights.
“As there are only a few plants that grow in winter, planting radish helps the soil to recover. It symbolized our purpose by driving sustainable, long-term performance.”
Following the multifunctional trend, New Purple 2364 can be used on lips, eyelids and nails. According to the company, it also offers anti-oxidation, anti-glycation and anti-hyaluronidase protection for skin and nails.
The content pigment can be used for application in makeup formulations, including anhydrous makeup, and personal care products like soap. “New Purple 2364 can be formulated depending on desired final intensity: up to 20% in lipsticks, up to 10% in eyeshadow (eyes contours), up to 20% in nail polish,” Martin informs.
The pigment was tested on African, Asian and Caucasian complexions to reveal an “intense and homogenous” color. It was found to provide stability to temperature exposure and light radiation when formulated at 10%.
The Givaudan Active Beauty team has specially formulated an eyeshadow concept: Cosmic purple. This creamy eyeshadow has been developed as an “invitation to experience visibly vibrant yet sustainable makeup.”
Featuring New Purple 2364, Omegablue and Cristalhyal e-Perfection, Cosmic purple offers “high-impact color, pigmentation, soothing and smoothing effects.”
Omegablue is a cosmetic ingredient created from upcycled wild bilberries used for advanced skin repairs such as revert skin dryness, irritation and desquamation caused by lipid barrier damage.
Cristalhyal e-Perfection, launched by the company in March, is an environmentally sustainable and patented vectorized complex of bentonite clay and high molecular weight hyaluronic acid.

Givaudan conducted a consumer study in France with regular makeup users aged 18 to 50, and found that 84% of respondents felt that the color went well with their skin tone.
“New Purple 2364 is more than a vibrant pigment – it responds to consumer values with natural origin content. It is also ID Pack-certified,” says Yohan Rolland, personal care category manager at Givaudan Active Beauty.
