Givaudan launches first skin microbiome-centered fragrance technologies
04 Nov 2021 --- Givaudan is unveiling the Z-biome Platform, hailed as “the first microbiome-centered fragrance technologies in the industry.” The launch comes amid the rising consumer belief that well-being is connected to the health of the skin.
Givaudan believes that healthy skin starts at what it describes as the “invisible level.” This refers to the epidermal microbiome, which, just like a fingerprint, is unique.
Scientists and perfumers have created My Z-biome and Z-biome Deo so that consumers can select microbiome-friendly fragrances across a range of personal care products and body deodorants.
They have been designed for all types of skins.
Beautiful scents and the microbiome
My Z-biome is a fragrance design tool that allows Givaudan perfumers to craft microbiome-friendly fragrances that take special consideration of the skin’s microflora.
The Z-biome Deo technology is specifically for personal hygiene, says the company. It allows the creation of microbiome-friendly and deo-effective fragrances.
Z-biome Deo is based on more than 30 years of expertise in malodor counteraction research to effectively combat sweat malodor while allowing the natural perspiration process.
Ultra-gentle on skin
The fragrance giant says these new technologies are backed by its perfumery expertise, which has been elevated by science and validated through extensive bacteria testing.
They are designed to respect the bacteria that live on the skin and scalp and work in harmony with their natural microflora.
“We always try to develop new technologies which are relevant to consumers’ needs, so the new Z-biome platform helps address the desire to protect the skin microbiome as well as enhancing overall well-being,” says Jeremy Compton, global head of science & technology, fragrances, at Givaudan.
The new fragrance technologies have come about following extensive testing of raw perfumery ingredients for their impact on the skin’s most common bacteria population.
The Z-biome Platform will help customers create products that take care of the skin and work in harmony with the skin’s natural microbiome, notes Givaudan.
Microbiome growth
The skin’s microbiome has been coming into sharpened focus recently.
Innova Market Insights’ data reveals the demand for microbiome personal care products is on the rise. In the past five years, personal care products that feature a prebiotic or probiotic claim have witnessed an average annual growth of 73% (Global, CAGR 2016-2020).
In late October, Symrise launched SymProBiome, a microbiome research and product development platform that collects data and provides manufacturers with an in-depth understanding of the microbiome for ingredient development in the skin, oral cavity, gut, scalp and underarm areas.
Also last month, Israeli start-up Synergio disrupted the skin microbiome space with the launch of its botanical preservation system for personal care products which boasts skin microflora-benefitting properties.
