Kao Corporation subsidiary Kate Cosmetics has launched an international campaign inspired by the Japanese performance art, kabuki. The Kabuke: Break Convention campaign features the rollout of two products — Kate Smooth Fit Pressed Powder and Kate Real Shading Stick.
Together, the products are designed to add blue nuances to makeup, playing off of traditional kabuki colors and shading.
Kate has the slogan “No More Rules” as an ode to makeup that “defies convention and encourages self-expression.” The company ethos is built around shadow-enhancing makeup — a technique of Japanese origin that uses light and shadow to create the appearance of dimension.
Kate Cosmetics explains that the roots of kabuki lie in the spirit of kabuku — a refusal to conform. “Kabuki has long conveyed essence and emotion through a distinctive interplay of light and shadow,” says the company. Traditional kabuki features stylized costumes, and kumadori makeup is identifiable by its intricate, bright patterns over white foundation.
The campaign is fronted by kabuki actor and Kiyomoto‑style (the narrative music featured in kabuki plays) singer Ukon Onoe. Onoe is said to embrace modernity while honoring tradition, aligning with the campaign’s vision to “embrace one’s true self.”
Kate aims to draw attention to unconventional self-expression through the campaign. The company hopes to bring shadow-enhancing makeup inspired by Japanese aesthetics to global audiences.
