Mibelle Biochemistry purchases thermo- and photo-protective active from Mirexus
03 Oct 2022 --- An asset deal between Mibelle Biochemistry and Mirexus, a Canadian company that offers PhytoSpherix, an environmentally sustainable glycogen (phytoglycogen) derived from plants, has been successfully completed.
PhytoSpherix is a multipurpose additive that can be used to boost skin hydration and barrier function, increase formulation feel and boost the effectiveness of other active ingredients by protecting them from thermo- and photo-degradation.
The asset deal expands Mibelle Biochemistry’s active ingredient portfolio and strengthens the company’s position as a developer and manufacturer of high-quality active ingredients for the cosmetic and nutraceutical industries.
According to the terms of the agreement, the changeover took effect in October this year, and both companies agreed to keep the details of it confidential.
“I am glad about this asset deal, as we had been looking around for quite a while to find a target, matching our philosophy ‘inspired by nature – realized by science and similarly fitting smoothly into our existing product portfolio,” says Cornelia Schürch, managing director at Mibelle Biochemistry.
Driving environmental sustainability
According to Schürch, the new assets also drive Mibelle Biochemistry’s sustainable innovation efforts by further aligning the portfolio with the rising demand for natural and sustainable ingredients.
The branded products PhytoSpherix, EnerZea, Adveen and Susttain are integrated into Mibelle Biochemistry’s portfolio and can be purchased from the company.
“PhytoSpherix is finally fulfilling both requirements. All of us at Mirexus are happy to find the ideal home for our technology at Mibelle Biochemistry. The deep knowledge and capabilities of Mibelle will enable the growth of this technology beyond what Mirexus could do on its own,” says Phil Whiting, president and CEO at Mirexus Biotechnologies.
PhytoSpherix’s potential
PhytoSpherix, Mirexus’ proprietary bio-material, is made up of natural, corn-based phyto-glycogen particles that have the distinct advantage of being safe, biodegradable and non-toxic.
According to the company, this opens up a wide range of applications in which the properties of a bio-material can be applied to human-safe products. A trace amount can be used as a moisturizer, stabilizer, film former or encapsulant.
This botanical extract exhibits an intriguing range of distinctive, varied and valuable properties in addition to being secure and natural.
Skin aging, moisturization and free radicals
Mibelle Biochemistry previously introduced EpiCalsome – supramolecular calcium suited for aging skin and the “regeneration” of skin’s calcium gradient loss. In other moves, the company unveiled its upcycled coffee silverskin SLVR’Coffee for skin moisturization and the FenuKale Nu solution to combat environmental stress experienced by the skin.
Within studies, Mibelle Biochemistry conducted a clinical study to investigate the effects of its ingredients on common skin disorders as well as a novel disorder known as “5G irradiation.” The company’s ingredients were found to improve a variety of ailments, including scalp redness, itching and free radical damage.
