Roelmi HPC introduces “100% natural” upcycled ester Olifeel Glow for skincare and cosmetics
01 Apr 2022 --- The by-products of Mediterranean olives used in food industries are being upcycled and transformed into a new cosmetic ingredient called Olifeel Glow. Just launched by Roelmi Health & Personal Care (Roelmi HPC), the product is being hailed for reducing waste and using functional ingredients that may have otherwise been discarded.
“Olifeel Glow is derived from Olea Europaea, a typical plant of Mediterranean vegetation…It is a functional ingredient belonging to the category of esters.” Alessandra Adduci, product manager at Roelmi HPC, tells PersonalCareInsights.
“Olifeel Glow maximizes the use of all Olea Europaea components and minimizes waste and by-products (the biorefinery concept). It is based on standardized substances, specifically rebuilt similar to olive oil for cosmetic purposes.”
The ingredient is described as having a rich emollient texture that is especially designed for mature skin, providing moisturizing and glowing effects with little residue.
“It is natural-derived (according to ISO 16128) and tested for biodegradability (OECD test 301B). Hence, it demonstrates a unique high purity and sustainability feature; it stands as an ethical choice for sustainable cosmetics,” says Adduci.
Transparent and upcycled sourcing
“The raw materials are used after they exited the agro-food chain (e.g., surpluses and non-edible fractions), so they do not subtract food or land from people,” continues Adduci.
“The main bricks of Olifeel Glow are basic molecules that all by-products from olive oil,” says Adduci.
The company notes that the olive fruits come from transparent and traceable supply chains. It only uses “soft technologies” that can maintain a natural profile.
“It has no components coming from endangered species and does not negatively impact local micro-economies,” assures Adduci.
“They are not directly extracted or taken from olive oil derivatives. The main bricks of Olifeel Glow are basic molecules that all by-products from olive oil could be a source for them.”
Adduci explains that the impurities from the by-products are reduced in the final raw material by selecting and isolating molecules.
By isolating purified fractions, formulators are free to choose a natural ingredient depending on its chemical or functional properties.
Olifeel Glow for cosmetics
“Olifeel Glow is ideal for sun care thanks to its higher film-forming effect and faster skin absorption, bringing a bright skin feel with a very low residue and a substantial and refined touch,” shares Adduci.
This does not mean that it has been tested to protect the skin from sun damage, she flags.
The ester has been demonstrated to offer “good stabilizing properties” due to its high compatibility with formulas and enhancing various cosmetics – also providing nourishing effects.
The company says that Olifeel Glow is ideal for “sun care formulas developed in sticks, waterproof or inverse forms.”
For color cosmetics, Roelmi HPC suggests applying Olifeel Glow to bind pigments.
Compared to other vegetable oils, Olifeel Glow is reported to provide higher film-forming effects and increase the skin absorption rate. Additionally, it is said to brighten the skin and leave a low residue.
Furthermore, Roelmi HPC launched an anti-aging upcycled active ingredient for boosting skin elasticity by enhancing the mitochondria.
