“Sheen over shine”: Active Concepts debuts On-The-Glow kit inspired by clean girl beauty trend
12 Dec 2022 --- Active Concepts has unveiled On-The-Glow, a prototype kit containing products designed for a healthy and glowy complexion. The launch reflects social media-driven skincare trends where consumers desire to achieve a “donut glazed,” “dewy” or “glowy” skin using makeup and hydrating skincare to achieve a youthful appearance.
“The On-The-Glow kit is composed of six different formulations to provide the skin with a naturally radiant glow that does not appear oily or greasy,” Myriam Bougdim, marketing and communications associate at Active Concepts, tells PersonalCareInsights.
Moreover, the company has observed a “significant change” in the cosmetics sector as consumers are more concerned with making their skin appear clear and glowing than concealing their imperfections.
What’s in the kit?
The “clean girl look” is touted as one of the most sought-after skin traits this year and is also one of the most searched topics on the internet, according to Active Concepts. The On-the-Glow kit offers a six-step regimen for skin and hair care to achieve the look.
“SOS Dry Shampoo effectively absorbs oil that weighs down hair with the addition of Mycofuse Protect to provide pollution protection and revitalize your hair from everyday stressors,” shares Sejal Topiwala, marketing manager of Americas and Asia-Pacific at Active Concepts, tells PersonalCareInsights.
“Clarifying Tonic is refreshing and pore-purifying with AC Water Kefir PHA providing a vegan polyhydroxy acid for cellular renewal properties, and Glass Skin Veil provides a beautiful glow to the skin while utilizing AC Sebum Control Enzyme PF to help regulate sebum production.”
Topiwala and Bougdim note that C PolyJackharides in the Radiant Moisturizer helps deliver an “intense and bouncy” moisturization without a heavy or greasy feel.
“Hint of Tint allows for lightweight BB cream coverage with the addition of AC BioPolymer Chia PF, which naturally binds to excess sebum. Meanwhile, Shine Me Up Stick leaves behind a sapphire radiant glow for that touch of light where you need it most, utilizing ACB Tonka Bean Bioferment PF for increasing luminescence, so the skin appears healthy and radiant,” adds Bougdim.
Film of dew
Glowy skin may be confused with oily skin. However, there is a “thin line” between oily, greasy and dewy, glowing skin, notes Active Concepts.
“The terms ‘dewy skin’ and ‘glowy skin’ can be used interchangeably. They allude to a healthy, glowing complexion that will make you appear more luminous, glossy, and youthful; they do not refer to having oily skin, but rather to have a balanced, healthy luminosity,” elucidate Topiwala and Bougdim.
“Sebum production by our skin and scalp is natural and necessary for a strong skin barrier, but too much of anything can lead to problems.”
They continue to explain that excessive oil in the hair may make it feel heavy and weighed down and excessive oil on the skin can result in a visibly greasy shine – often prone to problematic or acne-prone skin.
“On the other hand, those who do not produce enough oil from their skin and scalp may have dry skin and scalp, as well as possibly brittle hair. Active Concepts created the On-The-Glow kit to handle customers’ issues of shine, whether excessive or lacking, and to provide the skin and hair with essential nutrients,” clarify Topiwala and Bougdim.
Removing excess sebum
Sebum consists of approximately 41% triglycerides, 25% wax monoesters, 16% free fatty acids and 12% squalene produced by skin epithelium’s sebaceous glands.
Sebum is essential to skin health as it protects the skin and hair by preventing them from drying out and cracking. But hormones, genetics or poor skin care habits may be some reasons for excessive sebum production, says Active Concepts.
An excess of sebum can clog pores in the epithelium, making them more prominent and visible. Additionally, it can also trigger or worsen skin conditions like keratosis pilaris and acne.
Conversely, a homogeneous diffusion of lipid layers provides a healthy glowy complexion. Therefore, Active Concepts highlights that the appropriate routine to achieve the desired glow is to target “where the glow begins” – sebum.
