SkinCeuticals launches scar ameliorating NPD touting improvements in texture and discoloration
16 Sep 2021 --- US-based SkinCeuticals is unveiling a semi-occlusive treatment designed to protect vulnerable skin to help improve the appearance of new and recent scars. Advanced Scar Control reduces visible redness, softens and smooths scar texture, and reduces the intensity of visible scar discoloration.
Formulated with silicones combined with complementary soothing ingredients, the protective technology is clinically proven to improve the overall appearance of scars.
Advanced Scar Control is formulated for different scars and is appropriate for multiple skin types and tones. Additionally, it is an ideal complement to post-procedure scar care for procedures such as Mohs surgery, full-thickness excision and scar revision surgery.
“Advanced Scar Control delivers soothing protection to all scars, whether they come as a result of a cosmetic procedure or an unintended wound,” says Catherine Chang, physician partner at SkinCeuticals.
Inside the ingredient list
The key ingredients in the product include 95% silicones, a widely recognized ingredient in the medical community for scar care.
Silicones help retain skin hydration and allow for versatile applications as they can be used on the face and irregular skin of scar surfaces.
The product also contains 0.5% allantoin to soothe and protect the skin; 2% fatty acids to help condition skin and improve the appearance of dryness; and 1% ultralight silica to provide a non-sticky texture and smooth glide upon application.
“With the addition of Advanced Scar Control, we can now ensure that there is a clinically-tested, post-procedure and post-surgery treatment that works hand in hand with our at-home offerings for a more integrated skincare routine for our consumers,” explains Stephanie Kramer, US general manager of SkinCeuticals.
Improvement in scar appearance
In a 12-week clinical study, subjects saw a significant improvement in new and recent scar redness, discoloration, raised texture and rough texture.
The clinical study included 30 male and female participants aged between 22 to 51 years.
The participants had a scar less than 5 inches in size that developed over the previous one to three months on the face or body due to surgery, burns or abrasions.
Advanced Scar Control was applied daily as needed in conjunction with sunscreen. Efficacy evaluations were conducted at baselines at weeks two, four, eight and twelve.
Participants saw an improvement in scar appearance by up to 29%, a reduction in visible redness by up to 89%, softening and smoothing of scars by 23% and a reduction in the intensity of discoloration by 33%.
“In my practice, I have seen that different attributes such as age, skin tone, hormones and injury location can impact scar appearance. Regardless of these factors, a suitable silicone treatment can help skin retain hydration to prevent scar formation and protect the wound from external factors,” notes Chang.
The product is delivered as an invisible, non-sticky and non-greasy texture formulation, according to the company.
Ameliorating scars and marks
Beiersdorf recently entered the post-acne marks market via its dermocosmetics brand Eucerin and the global launch of two products from its Dermopure series for acne-prone skin.
The combination of the products – Eucerin Dermopure Triple Effect Serum with Thiamidol and the Eucerin Dermopure Protective Fluid SPF 30 – offers an effective solution to reduce and prevent post-acne marks and blemishes, and to control shine.
